Gremlins 2: The New Batch [Blu-ray]

Not as good as the original
This is, of course, the sequel to Gremlins, the 1980s movie that was a combination of horror movie and comedy. It brings back stars, Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates as well as Howie Mandel voicing Gizmo and Dick Miller, Jackie Joseph, and Keye Luke reprising their roles from the first film. It also adds cast members like Robert Picardo, John Glover, John Astin, and Christopher Lee, as well as has cameos by Hulk Hogan and film critic Leonard Maltin. The premise of this movie is that Gizmo is subjected to being a lab rat by a billionaire in NY. Billy and Kate, who conveniently happen to be working in the same building in which he is being experimented on, manage to rescue Gizmo, but he gets wet of course causing him to spawn Gremlins who take over the building. The movie is much campier than the first one, which itself was not without campiness. It is pretty much a straight comedy with a bunch of comedic violence, but the Gremlins are not a sinister murderous threat in this movie as they are a threat to damage property. The Gremlins are really the stars of the movie (Gizmo is not as major a character as he was in the first movie), and there are a lot more of them in this movie than there was in the first. The extras all carry over from the DVD. Those include a commentary track by the writer, director, and Galligan, in which they admit that the movie is a totally unnecessary sequel. Then there are some deleted scenes, a gag reel, and the trailer (along with a couple of smaller, minor extras). The A/V quality is okay, but it did not get a great video restoration that some older movies get when released on Blu-Ray.Overall, the movie tends to garner mixed opinions. Some people like it more than the original movie and some, like me, think it is okay but was not really needed. The overall plot was kind of dumb, but the plot of the first movie took a lot of suspension of disbelief too. But to me, this went beyond that and was a far more typical 80s comedy than the first movie was. I liked it far more when I was a little kid watching it than I like it as an adult.

The sequel no one wanted...
...until they needed it. I can see it now. It's the mid-eighties. A board room filled to the brim with smoke from cigars and cigarettes. Well before the days of California outlawing tobacco use. A small group of corporate men grumbling and arguing as they throw darts at a wall filled with hand-written notes written on cocktail napkins, scraps of paper and paper bags. On these notes are ideas for movies. Buddy cop comedy? Foil characters forced to work together? Stereotypical archetypes? They are throwing darts at ideas and running out of darts. Fast. In comes the intern with the morning's coffee and sandwiches when one of these corporate fat cats hands the intern his last dart. Throw it, he says. Hesitant, he looks around to the other men who look on with disinterest and disdain. This dart is special. A green fin dart in a world of red finned darts. The intern throws the dart. Smack! Square on the cocktail napkin from the Brown Derby that reads, "Sequel?"Then begins the corporate equivalent of an Rube Goldberg machine for writing. Scripts are scanned then tossed. Interns berated. Careers threatened. Then bam! A golden jewel glows in a pile of muck. A sequel they breathed. But a sequel to what? And from this pile of muck the jewel burned bright. A sure-fire winner. A surprise sleeper hit. Gremlins. It was so simple. Easy. Mad money! Gadzooks! They cried. The answer was in front of them the whole time. And no one would expect a sequel about a movie when the movie ended with the main critter being taken away from the main characters. I know. Let's throw Phoebe Cates back in it! Howie Mandel can do weird voices! See? I told you lightning can strike twice. This movie is a disaster. A movie that just didn't need to be made. From start to finish the average Gremlins enthusiast is rolling their eyes. A creepy smiling corporate dude with a state-of-the-art smart building and a hundred floors dedicated to just about everything from television stations to accounting and marketing. And Gizmo, the critter that was taken away in the first movie, is back. And guess what happens? I'll give you three guesses but you'll only need one. The hydro-phobic critter Gizmo gets a second education on hydro-dynamic fluid engineering and let's slip the dogs of war. There is a rather moving rendition of New York, New York at the end of the movie. It's pretty good. Like the rug in the Big Lewbowski, it really tied the movie together. This movie is a disaster but it is a classic disaster. It's kitschy, silly and ridiculous and worth every minute watching it. So take a chance. Rent the movie. See what I mean. Be prepared to laugh even at the serious parts.

Brilliant Blu Ray
Excellent Blu Ray. I ordered from Amazon (item description advises the Blu Ray is region free) i wasnt sure as lots of other sites say the Blu Ray us US only. Happy to say it arrived today and works on UK Blu Ray fine. Great Blu Ray, crisp and clear picture, lots of extras -making of, outtakes (deleted scenes), gag reel, trailer, alternate hone video sequence and commentary by Joe Dante, Charlie Haas and Zach Calligan. Perfect Blu Ray for one of my favourite movies-if you like Gremlins 2 and have Blu Ray this is a must-Brilliant and well worth it.

Surprisingly enjoyable
Having watched and re-watched the original film countless times as a child, I didn't expect to enjoy this film as much as I did. The tone is totally different, which works as I think if they had tried to capture the same tone as the first it wouldnt have worked so well. I must admit, I was expecting a really bad B-movie sequal, and though it does have elements of the ridiculous, it's funny, in a 'going back to your childhood' kind of way. I loved the characteristics of the new Gremlins, each one was different and they seemed more zany than the originals. Gizmo was still cute, and the return of Billy, his girlfriend and the older couple (I forget their names) from the original all work well. Overall a great chillout film to giggle to with family or loved ones.

All good
A special request from my grandson but didn't realise this film was that old (25 years - how time passes). DVD arrived OK, a day earlier than first expected delivery date. It seems in new in a sealed condition, so only suppose it's all OK and now one of the classics
