Easy as Pie (Vintage Lifestyle) Hardcover – July 17, 2010

Really enjoyed the vintage pictures and look forward to trying the recipes. Was expecting more history about pies as the was indicated, there was only a couple pages about history.

Benjamin Darling has given us a tasty slice of the past (in many flavors) is this completely delightful time capsule, EASY AS PIE. His research of old cookbook and recipes gathered for the 1920s through the 1960s celebrate that hallowed icon of the American Pie in recreation of fliers and ads and book covers that were widely distributed in an era before microwaves and frozen pies and even pie shops, showing how the American kitchen was the haven for the creation of that very special food - the pie. Using period imagery of women and their children, of products as basic as milk in a bottle, Jello packaging, and photographs of pies from the past etc, Darling offers a really fine cookbook - a book that not only gives recipes but also some of the sense of history that surrounds these favorite homemade goodies. And he also recreates those wonderful old type of instructions of how to assemble the pie.There are fine recipes for, naturally, Apple Pie, but also for Cherry Pie, and pies made of all manner of fruits, Coconut Cream and Banana Cream pies, to Raisin Pies (remember those from church socials?), Chocolate Pies, Jelly Pies, and on to tarts of all types. The recipes for crusts and how to shape them are alone worth the price of this book, given that most people who even attempt to bake at home use ready to roll piecrust sticks from a package!This is an excellent cookbook, but it is even a better token of memorabilia of kinder times. A perfect bread and butter gift (do people still do that?) for leaving in the homes of people we visit on vacations. Grady Harp, July 10
