Janet Davis has organized her book to take you from chord basics to playing backup on songs she has included. It is easy to follow and leads you from chord patterns to chord progressions using passing notes and full songs with backup tab for the songs.

I got this book when I first began playing the banjo back in the late 1970s. Its even better now because of the DVD that accompanies it. Not like the old vinyl record or Cassette tapes of yesteryear. great tool. Janet Davis is fabulousJon

Janet is a fine player and teacher. Having the visual reference is a big help for me at this point in my study.

I think a lot of banjo players learn the banjo in the inverse order to guitar; that is, we learn breaks/how to play solo, then when it comes to playing in a band we're a bit stumped! This has seriously improved my technique and allowed me to...not suck...while playing with others!If you want to join a band, I'd call this a must read.

Lots of information here. Learn to vamp, add fill in licks, embellishments, play Scruggs style backup and up the neck. Lots of songs and examples. Everything you need for 3 finger banjo backup!

the dvd was made with a cheaper program, not able to have any control like other dvds for instructional purposes I have.I would recommend the dvd for viewing positions and techniques and the book and cds
