very good knee brace
I have a medial and lateral meniscus tear that the orthopaedic surgeon said did not need surgery. He suggested a knee brace that they gave me but it had no patellar support. I researched knee braces online and initially tried the medium Shock Doctor Knee Support with Dual Hinges. When it arrived I could not get it past my ankle. I am 5'9" and weigh 180. I then ordered the large after calling Shock Doctor (the company) for help with sizing. When this arrived I could only get it onto my knee with a lot of force and then it was so tight around the calf that it was painful after 5 minutes. My 5'4" 120 lb wife could not get the medium past her calf and the large fit her. Both times Amazon let me return it with no problem. (kudos to Amazon)I then showed the Shock Doctor Ultra Knee Supporter with Bilateral Hinges to my brother who is a hand surgeon and he thought this looked like it would have more support. I ordered the large and it fit perfectly. It is also much easier to adjust the straps than the less expensive one. My only gripe is if I use it for biking or Pilates the extra x strap on the back digs into the back of my knee a little. When I use it for tennis or golf I find it gives excellent support and is very comfortable. This one is only about $14 more than the other one and is more comfortable, has more support, is easier to adjust the straps and has a more realistic size.

don't bother if your a big guy!!
I just got the knee brace and can't wear it. Luckily I mistakenly ordered Mueller pro level B5333xxxl at the same time. It is a wrap around design and fits perfectly. The Shock Doctor brace appears solid and a good design for someone that wants to protect their knee. I am attempting to heal a sprain. The "sleeve" design requires you to slide it over your foot and up over the knee. HUGE design flaw.My knee was killing me just trying to put it on. I got as far as my calf and the XL wouldn't fit. It's going back!!! FYI I'm 5'8" close to 300lbs with big legs so I got the xxxl. I'm wearing the Mueller now and my knee feels great.

Rubs your legs raw
I have used the brace for a few weeks now and am finding it does a nice job of stabilizing the knee. However, my biggest complaint is the fit. What I found so far are two issues that are enough to dock 3 stars from my rating:The brace will dig into your leg if you aren't extremely careful with how you wear it. Don't let the neoprene part tuck under the stabilization or you will get hard rubber digging into your leg. Even if worn properly, it will push through under heavy use and rub a small area of your leg raw. I found I have to put a bandaid on my leg to provide better protection.I wear this brace on my right leg. When running, the brace will rub your other leg. I believe its the Velcro that sticks too far out. Every so often I feel a harsh scrape.. from what I can tell, the velcro area that says "shock doctor" on it sticks up just enough to rub, and the friction will push it back down until it starts to peel up again. After a brief run on a treadmill my left leg had a nice rash on it from getting rubbed every few minutes. (I have not tried it outdoors yet)Basically I feel the stability is great, but the fit is poor. There is a lot to this brace, with straps and thick rubber pieces sticking out in sloppy ways that will wear on a runner that does any kind of distance or time. I can't give it anything more than 2 stars if I can't use it or if I feel others may encounter the same issue. The brace is too expensive to have sit in a drawer. Certainly your milage may vary - it appears others really like it. I just hope these people have actually used the brace for long distance or longer time workouts where fit becomes more and more important.Since I can't return the brace, I'm probably going to have to come up with my own modifications to eliminate rub areas or I won't be able to use this brace unless its under pants for walking around stability (which I rarely need to do).Maybe I just got a bad model but I would be cautious if you are an athlete who knows what a constant rub, even a slight one, can do over time. A simple 10k would leave both my legs raw in places as is.

TORN MENISCUS
Service was great. I received the brace less than 24 hrs from the time of order.Per the other reviews it is a little on the small size--I did get the next larger and it fit great. It fit great and allowed me to run better than I had in months. First time I wore it---I tore the meniscus in my knee and maybe more. I will find out more in the coming weeks after the MRI. I can't say it was the fault of the brace, but, I'm laid up nonetheless.

great support but get a size larger
this item is great. i use it in the military and was amazed that i didnt feel any discomfort or pain in my knee but i did realize that my leg was extremely wet! if you leave it on too long your leg would sweat bad. other than that the brace isnt the correct sizing. it says a large is from 13-14 but it doesnt feel that way. if your going to order this then order something larger than your actual size.

GREAT PRODUCT
My knee measured in the middle of the LARGE range (see Shock Doctor website or there's a post at this site for the measurements) and the brace fits my knee perfectly. I have a $900 (at least that's what the doctors bill said) Donjoy knee brace following ACL surgery 20 years ago and progressive osteoarthritis in my right knee over the years. I'm 60 years old and 215 pounds. This brace is more comfortable than the Donjoy and is easier to get on. It does fit snuggly, I don't even have to use the Velcro tighteners, but that's really the point of a knee support. The metal side stay did press on the inside of the knee at first, but 5 minutes into using it, I couldn't feel any pressure from the stays or rubbing of the fabric like the cheaper "sleeve" type braces. Can't say enough good things about this product, other than I'm buying another one for my left knee for backpacking/long distance day hiking. I was taking ibuprofen like candy on past backpacking trips, but so far this brace has eliminated the need for pills and the possible negative health effects of long term use of NSAID's.
