Long for a zombie book. Good read... particularly brutal.
This book took me a few days to read. Chapters are also noticeably longer than other books in the genre. Overall, it is definitely different than what I have been reading in ZA fiction (e.g., Shawn Chesser, Mark Tufo, etc.). If you read Tom Clancy and Dan Coyle novels in the 80’s and 90’s, then the story format is basically that, but with zombies. What you won’t get is a story of survival from a few individual characters’ perspectives. What you will get is a global story of how various countries deal with a ravaging zombie plague and the impacts on its citizens, good or (mostly) bad. And this plague is probably one of the worst I’ve read in a ZA book. “Fast” zombies, infects quickly, and results in billions and billions of zombies who retain more of an animalistic behavior than a stumbling, bumbling horde. This story is brutal on a variety of levels. The zombie attacks are descriptively gory. When the infected hit an area, nobody is really spared, including elderly and children, so be prepared for that. It is also politically brutal as various powers make maneuvers to save their countries. Is there a bit of stereotyping? Yeah, you will find typical Chinese, Russian, and even American characters here who could’ve stepped right out of a typical Hollywood film. But Ryan has done his research in true Tom Clancy style. The acknowledgments at the end are worth the read just to see the efforts and time he put into to get accuracy in all aspects of the story. He managed to cover tank battles, naval battles, spec ops missions, and even an invasion with great detail.Social commentary is mostly subtle. Certainly themes about self-prepardness, “social justice,” and “haves and have nots” come through in Ryan’s writing. The notion that governments really cannot help you or may make things worse during a disaster abound in various storylines. Various characters - good, bad, and innocent - meet terrible fates, so there is certainly an overall “life is cruel” theme. There is commentary about what people will do when they are desperate or when law and order is non existent as various states break down even before the plague shows up.If I had one criticism, it is the difficulty in developing characters in this style of story. In that sense, I think Clancy definitely did it better with the likes of characters such as Jack Ryan, John Clark, and Ding Chavez. I never felt like any particular character developed like those. Probably the closest was the character, Powers, who is sort of the Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt in World War Z) in this book. I would have liked to have seen more of him in the story, or additional stories featuring him. There is more to that character, and I didn’t quite feel like I got to know him enough in this book. But to be fair, characters are dying left and right so you may get a quick character study and scene only to have him or her die at the end of it. Like I said, this is about as brutal as a zombie apocalypse book can get. Of all the scenes in the book, the one that probably got me the most squeamish was the American black ops interrogator “Angel of Death” interrogating (torturing) a North Korea scientist... it has a weird mix of torture and sexuality... not sure if that part worked or not for me.In sum, worth the read, just be prepared for a long read.

Great potential - some missteps - worth a read!
WARNING! SPOILERS!I enjoyed this book and it had great potential. But people keepmaking the most stupid mistakes. For instance - weeks into the infection , when Western Europe is overrun, or earlier, why on earth have the British not closed their beaches on the canal adjecent coasts? When people - and infected - are sure to try to get to the beaches? Why is there no security zone around the coastline? Evacuation of the areas? Closed off/manned the beaches with soldiers or drafted, armed citizens? What about a complete curfew? And who would be STUPID enough in that situation to run to a corpse in the water. Come on! Also things are too simple. One infected child -AT AN ARMY HOSPITAL/aid station ON THE «FRONT» - and all of France falls. Really? On the front lines, in a military camp there is no quarantine of anyone sick?? At least a precautionary quarantine area around the army medical tents? Closed off security zones? And armed soldiers could not kill 1 girl?? And why do the leaders drag their feet using nuclear weapons when billions are infected?? We are talking world annihalation! And people/the US President is abhorref by Russias use of meagre tactical nukes? When strategic nukes could possibly have saved half the world? If that leaves parts of Asia or Europe/Russia uninhabitable so be it! Dear God! And the US? One line of wall built by soldiers? Meanwhile China - in days - pulled of a miracle of preparations? How about drafting the entire construction business of the southwest USA to bulid a second wall AND deviding the spaces between walls into closed off zones to minimize and contain breaches, starting at the most probable locations for breach? Defending the border with Mexico with a derelict portion of fence nearby a US business park full of abandoned semi-tailer trucks and no-one has the initiative to start placing shipping containers etc where the derelict fence is. And - they speak Portugise in Brazil.. not Spanish.. Then - when the US Presdient has done EVERYTHING right and - at least temporarily- saved the US, he resigns?I REALLY want to love this book since I have wanted to read just this kind of «strategically told» Zombie story for many years, since I am really bored with the micro-scenario, but this could easily have been so much better. However I will buy and read the next book if there is a sequel!

Exceptional Military Read
Dead Storm is 600+ pages of Nicholas Ryan’s strength in storytelling with action, tension, and suspense throughout.Dead Storm begins in North Korea and takes you around the world. The research is evident in the book creating an authentic story which is a frighteningly realistic account of the zombie apocalypse as the world fights to survive. The book is detailed and takes on the perspective of the war from various viewpoints as the plot unfolds.Ryan weaves fiction with real world stories into a masterpiece that you will consume. I highly recommend Dead Storm and look forward to future books by Nicholas Ryan.

breathless narrative but not much else
It tears along at a frantic place amid stereotypical characters - the tall gaunt faced army types and the elegant diplomats and of course the rolled up shirtsleeves of just about everyone. Not to mention the chain smoking Chinese and the evil Russians. The Americans come off pretty well - how surprising is that? The military knowledge is deployed throughout down to the last piece of ammunition but the credibility of the take is very problematic. Why didnt the Chinese drop nuclear weapons? Are they not as evil as the Russians to the author? Why is it only the last section that anyone thinks about searching for an antidote to the plague virus? Maybe the author just wanted to deploy all the armies of all the world like hes playing with toy soldiers. Politically its totally naive and simplistic. Still it gets the job done, lol.

It started of ok, then become boring
I bought it because it was suppsed to be about different countries, coming together . A more techno thriller version of World War Z. But it just turned into American tub thumping. 30 or more pages on a single incident, and then suddenly a single incident and a entire country sis gone. How the hell did an entire hoard walk from China to Europe in a few weeks. None of the time scales made sense in. The end I got so bored, I new one infection in a country, next page over run. I think the author got bored and wanted to hurry it up to the end. So the whole world has fallen aprt from America. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Best by far !
Ok I've read a few too many zombie books/novels lately but this one ?? Took things to a whole new level ! Couldn't put it down ! Which ment i read it far to quickly ! Bit of a slow start just to lure you into a false sense of security but then it's none stop political and zombie action ! It's hard to tell who takes more bites out of each other the zombies or the politicians!!! Great relevant way more !

Hope
IThe zombie apocalypse a grim bloody war but this book gives us a global view which makes it more horrific as country after country falls...This book is exciting full of action with well drawn characters.I love the story but it requires a little touch of hope as with a lot of zombie stories it is one of endless defeat and that is why this book requires a sequel that allows humanity to fight back....It's a great story but we require more

Believable!
Great story, great attention to detail and all round great book. Recommended! My only (minor) problem was the fairly stereotypical Russian and Chinese attitudes, but this didn't detract from the story too much. 5 stars.
