Q: what are the bumps inside for?

Although you might think this just slides down a 2x4, it actually works by stepping down the 2x4 guide. You position the beam cutter and with it in position you rock the saw in an arc, making your cut. Then you move the beam cutter and repeat. The bumps are actually points that dig into the 2x4 and hold it steady while you make the cut.

Q: What's the difference between the tmw-57 and the tmw-56? what will one do that the other won't? do i need both?

The -57 is a non-adjustable channel for use with a 2x4. The -56 is adjustable and will work with a 2x6. You don't need both.

Q: What is the difference between this and the lumber cutter?

A lumber cutter is more like a saw mill and a timber cutter you can just trim thin bordsa off of the log

Q: Does the head on this pivot so I could fasten a board cross ways and do a square end cut?

The bracket that holds the bar of the saw pivots, should be no problem.

Unusable.

The product is a good idea but totally unusable as the pad on the clamping mechanism that attaches the guide to the chainsaw bar is not centralised thus pushing the chain too far over to the left, the chain rubs itself on the clamp.
