A fun way to learn about networking!
I loved this book! I really learn best when I can try things and not just read about them so having working examples was very helpful as I read through each section. I don't even know how many times I said, "Whoa, that's cool!" I also had no idea I could find out so much fascinating information about my local network and now I have just enough knowledge to break things in fun and interesting ways, which of course I would never do. Probably. Many thanks to Michael W Lucas for writing such a funny, enjoyable, informative book that a novice like me had no trouble grasping.

If you are a professional systems administrator this book will improve your life.
"We need to call Michael and add 0s to a check till he comes to teach this to our server teams."After reading my initial copy of this book I told everybody on all the server teams at work to get and read copies of it.As a network engineer this book has all the information about networks I wish every server person had laid out in a clear, easy to understand, sensible, and amusing format. If you read, understand, and follow this book you will improve your troubleshooting, make your network person love you, and decrease problems with your servers dramatically. From now on I'll recommend every single systems person I work with read this book. You should get a copy. Today.

Very good explanations, all the basics concepts that I needed ...
Very good explanations, all the basics concepts that I needed to learn, however I wanted to see more command line examples. Great for beginners.

Very helpful
Having been a developer for most of my career and only dabbled in networking as I had to, I felt like I knew just enough networking to be dangerous. So I picked up this book to help expand my knowledge on a couple of topics and it did just that. I wish MWL had more books, I really appreciate his writing style, it's extremely digestible, relatable, and just the right amount of humor mixed in here and there to prevent it from being too dull to finish.

very well explained
It is explained in a way that I was able to understand perfectly as a system administrator. There are many things I do in my job that did for years without really thinking de details behind those things. But, from the very first chapters it really helped me connect the dots and have a better picture of the network. Thanks a lot to the author

A fun, easy, informative read.
I'm about 3/4 of the way through the book, but I can say that it is written at a perfect level for someone like myself. I'm mainly a software / systems engineer but also have some sysadmin responsibilities. Some of the material I have picked up previously along the way, but this book fills in the gaps and provides important new knowledge. I especially appreciated the sections on IPV6, which I've been attempting to pretend doesn't really exist (easy, since it doesn't on our work network). Most of all, it's a fun, easy read.

Looking to Learn ? Buy a Lucas book.
Another charming work with wisdom for professionals, aspirants, and adventurers alike. The print quality is very good and the indexed content is immensely useful. Michael W Lucas excels at explaining advanced technology in a style that is immediately accessible.Reading Lucas is akin to a correspondence course on System Administration. Often building from BSD environments, his well-written instructions highlight a toolset of useful-things to the reader. Thoughtful footnotes deliver license-unencumbered, professional help to those in need--for we who play with these machines need help indeed.

Excellent Resource
I work in the field that this book covers and found it to be an excellent resource. It is mainly a refresher of the basics for me but as the author notes it's meant more for SysAdmins to use when working with Network Admins. The author's writing style is humorous and engaging. All subjects are well explained and, in most cases, good examples provided with those subjects. I particularly liked his presentation on using tcpdump.I highly recommend this work to anyone either entering into Systems/Network Administration as both a good intro and refresher. Five stars all around.

A Prefect Book for Networking Newbies with Lots of Pro Tips, Too
I'm a seasoned web developer, but I'm basically a networking noob... I wanted a book to begin my journey towards really understanding how TCP/IP networking works. This is EXACTLY the book I was looking for.Very easy to understand, but loaded with excellent technical details and pro tips throughout, there's something here for everyone. The author also manages to keep it light and humorous from start to finish. This book is an excellent addition to any technical professional or hobbyist's bookshelf (sysadmin, developer, QA, manager, or otherwise). Even a seasoned IT pro may learn a few new tricks from the later chapters (re: debugging network issues, packet sniffing, etc.).Buy it. Read it. Thank me later. ;-)
