Awesome LENS for the money
My camera gear: Sony a7II. The photos in question were taken indoors at night with the aperture set to f/1.8 PROS: This lens produces photos considerably sharper than any other lenses I've used. The picture quality is fantastic to say the least. The quality of pictures in subdued lighting such as is found indoors is another excellent thing. No longer do I get poor quality pictures but pictures sharp and outstanding in color as well. This lens, for what I use it for, is by far the best budget lens on the market. I'm sure there are other lenses that are better but you will pay a considerably higher price for those than this one. I am overjoyed with the performance of this lens. CONS: The lens is a bit heavy but that has never been a problem with me. To some who might have to carry the lens around all day in a photo shoot they might not like the extra weight but in spite of the weight it is a great performer. If you are looking for a zoom lens this is not it. It has no zoom but is fixed at 85mm. Again, in my case, zoom, although, it would be nice is not a major factor in my purchasing this lens. CONCLUSION: I am not sorry I bought this lens. It has more than exceeded my expectations. When I bought it, before it even arrived, I suspected that it most likely would be like the other lenses I owned. Those lenses produced good looking photos but never quite as sharp and colorful as I would like. I was kind of hoping this lens would prove me wrong and it did. The lens is superb, well worth the money, and I am not one bit sorry I bought it. As far as I am concerned this is going to be my carry around lens where ever I go whether it be on vacation or just walking around taking photos on an ordinary day.

Good for the price, but has trouble with AF in low light situations
For the price, this is a pretty nice lens. The build quality feels sturdy and IQ is good. However, it really has trouble locking AF in low light. I had a lot of luck with this lens using it for daylight portraits, but when I tried to use it in a low light wedding environment, it would not lock AF. I switched to my Sony 50 1.8 and while it was slow, it did lock AF so I got many shots that the Viltrox would have missed. To be fair, the lighting was very poor and even my friends 24-70 GM lens was slow and sometimes struggled to get AF lock. So overall, nice inexpensive 85mm f/1.8 for Sony FF, just understand it's limitations. I updated to the latest firmware with no issues, but the low light AF is still poor.

Just wow.
I was in the market for a Sony FE 85mm 1.8 but came across this one on YouTube. Reviews had nothing but great things to say about it. Great value and build quality is probably slightly better than the FE 85mm. Only gripe I have is that the lens hood screws on awfully tight and can be a hassle to remove at times. Nothing a quick sand/smooth can't fix. Won't even knock Viltrox for this, I won't use the lens hoods that often, and just stick to CP and UV filters for function/protection. This Viltrox 85mm 1.8 has a quick, razor sharp autofocus, produces beautiful bokeh, and the lens has a good weight to it (slightly heavier than Sony's FE 85mm). The focus ring feels amazing. This might be the best non-native Sony FE lens for the price! Photos attached.

Try to find this at a local camera store
Received this lens yesterday and returned it today. Unlike most returns, this will take almost a month to get a refund. So if you can buy it locally, you'll have a better return situation. A big problem is that the lens had a warranty card that said it was only valid if the dealer stamped it. No stamp. No warranty. And then there is the lens itself. On a Sony A7CR, which has a fabulous autofocus system, the lens struggled to find focus. Not only that, but it seems to search from infinity back in, which is just the opposite of what you want. Pros: Nice looking lens. Low price. Cons: Amazon's lengthy return policy for photo equipment. No warranty. Poor autofocus. Ridiculous focus ring action ... multiple turns to achieve manual focus. I wanted to like this lens. No luck this time.

It’s worth the purchase
This is the best lens I ever bought and sent back. I’ve bought this lens three times, and sent it back three times. Twice for the Fuji X-T3, and once for the Sony a7R4. On both systems it was amazing. The problem was that it’s not a lens I would use for work, or important events. Other than reliability it’s great. The lens will freeze your camera every so often, and it will miss about 15% of the shots due to average auto focus accuracy (AF speed is amazing). This lens is excellent and worth the money IF... Your not doing serious work with it.

Tack sharp but had firmware issues.
Lens is tack sharp and produced some great portraits. The bokeh in the background was nice. I have a Sony a6300 so the effective focal length is closer to 127mm, which may or may not suit your needs. For the money the quality is tough to beat. My particular unit would not update the firmware and had lots of trouble autofocusing in certain situations. I ultimately returned it but I think I just had a defective unit. If you’re looking for a budget friendly, sharp, portrait lens for Sony e I would suggest you give it a try.

Just received a few hours ago so I'm still testing but so far it's very sharp and bokeh is great. WIll have to do more tests to see if there's any colour shift but so far, a great deal for a lens this sharp.

Great value in a F1.8 85mm lens. Pros : Image Quality Build Focus Speed Price Cons : Lens hood retention could be more positive Seems unreasonably large compared to Sony 85mm 1.8 No weather seal gasket Tacky branding Gripes are relatively minor. Overall a great lens for the price.
