Good one
Thought this was a good little scary story horror film. A group of friends go into a house on halloween night where they find a book containing creepy events. Theres one scene in it that generally got me so on edge lol. Highly recommend this one. Good dvd, came on time and played perfect.

Well polished - but lacking bite.
I'm not sure if the director intended this to be a homage to eighties horror but it cam across as that to me, who I must admit must have watched the entire eighties catalogue.Things I liked about it, the humour / dialogue, the characterizations and the filmic references (the shining, Nightmare on Elm Street, Evil Dead etc). It gave you time to get to know the characters so that you cared about them when they were in jeopardy. What I thought let it down was the way the characters met their demise, with one exception you are left guessing what actually happened to them - which diluted the tension some what. There is some really good lines in there though, worth watching for those alone. And the way the sixties is brought in was really well done with Vietnam and presidents Johnson and Nixon on the TV all the time reminding you why this was a dark period in American history. Loved the opening track -can't get that out of my head today.

Impactful
I, myself, am not an avid watcher of horror films nor a connoisseur of any sort in the matter but I shall do my best to summerise why I gave the film five stars. Firstly I would like to say why I enjoyed it so much. Since I don't watch many horror films, I tend to scare very easily, if you are the same then expect to at least jump a little in places but I feel the film did a very Good job at building suspense and delivering in quite an apt way. The camera work really lends itself to this end and I feel this ties the film together nicely. The dialogue was great, the narrative was intriguingly dark and the acting was spot on for what it needed to be. A few scenes i found the outcomes and senarios to be a bit predictable but the way they were executed was not disappointing and, as such, I haven't deducted a star. I think its a film I would come back to in the near future or watch with friends as I feel it is rewatchable, and I personally liked it so that alone is enough for me (maybe im a little biased🤷‍♂️). All in all, I found it to be very entertaining, it delivered a Good scare which all horror films should and it kept me focused, which is not an easy thing to do as I'm easily distracted. I loved it and I think, if you're considering it, which I hope you are, you'll love it too. Thanks for reading, hope I was helpful

Not bad ... just disappointing.
With a bit of patience Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark could have been a classic. Is there a director's cut coming out? I'm more frustrated than disappointed. It's the sort of teen pandering personality lacking film I would expect from some Sony b-movie.It follows a very similar plot to The Ring (not a bad thing) but each time we read the book something different haunts the character. In that way it is better than The Ring but made worse for having teens lead the film. Stella is almost perfectly designed to be the protagonist of a horror movie. She's smart, caring, a loner, an aspiring writer, a struggling family and her bedroom is decorated with horror movie posters. That's me, right? Then the rest of the movie is filled with disposable characters. It's a problem but the horror scenes themselves prevent Scary Stories from being a classic. The scary stories are honestly scary, or at least have the potential to be. The CGI is very noticeable but it doesn't matter because the designs are so well done and I can easily see this film giving teenagers nightmares. But I'm a cranky old man. I need it to slow down. What we get is great potential and then loud noises, over lit scenery (one character reads a book in a basement with no lights at night) and quick cuts from horror to reaction shots. Give me more time to choke on the hay and pull spiders out of my face and stop shouting at me. Kids these days and their MTV editing are ruining my stories."You don't read the book. The book reads you!" Is a line that should have been cut and forgotten about.

Good YA horror
I 'think' this may be more aimed at Young Adults rather than us haggard old lot, but I still enjoyed it.Good story, solid, but then I really wouldn't expect any different from a film with Del Toro's involvement in it.Good protagonists, kinda like Stranger Things in that they are the more 'outcast' of the school, and the usual Jock a-hole bully type.I liked the ghosts/horror creatures/things as well, a selection of them based on fears of the relevant kid, and you can see that this can be extended and create sequels, especially as the film has been left open story wise.I liked it, I am fussy as hell when it comes to films, especially Horror and Sci-fi... so for Horror-lite, it was just a good solid and enjoyable film

A fun and visually compelling film.
I found this movie visually compelling and felt engaged with all of the character throughout the movies. It's a f ilm that relies on old school ghost stories and urban legends, which I found really refreshing. It would have been very easy to adapt it from the books, and turn it into your average teen horror picture. Fortunately though, movie is really well paced and the small amount of time spent with the main characters at the beginning, meant that I actually cared when something bad happened to them. It's really difficult to write believable teenage characters, but on this occasion, I think they were well written and likeable. This is a really fun horror movie and I'd recommend that anyone go and watch it should they get the chance.

Don’t wait until Halloween!
Who says Halloween has to be on October 31st to enjoy some Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark then??? Alright, the stories or more creepy than they are scary. But I rate them much higher than the mixed bags of The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Tales From The Darkside and Creepshow. The stories here I find are all good... spooky... spine chillers. And there is a monster here that deserves a film all to himself... Jangly man...though he needs to pull himself together. Yep, this is sure to be a cult classic in Halloween’s to come for others, for me it’s a classic now!
