4000 Essential English Words, Book 1 with Answer Key Perfect Paperback – June 1, 2009

The 4000 Essential English Words series by Paul Nation is the most popular vocabulary book series among our ESL students. We have a minimum of fifteen copies at each level and they are frequently all on loan to different students.

These books by Paul Nation deserve more comprehensive reviews than they are receiving. Paul Nation is a well known authority on teaching English as a foreign language….or for those of us in the U.S., teaching ESL. He is well written and well published. He supports the view that teaching high-frequency words (the words that are used most often in conversation, newspapers, books, magazines etc) offers the biggest pay-off to children and adults learning English as their second language. I have been an ESL volunteer instructor for 10 years. But the world of ESL does not focus heavily on Mr. Nation's ideas or work -- and that is unfortunate. I am just now starting to use his books, and I completely understand why he advocates the teaching of high-frequency (and often "common" vocabulary) first. I have Books 1 and 2 only, but I am going to soon get Books 3 and 4. In any language, the words most FREQUENTLY used are the words most beneficial to most language learners. I think his books will be excellent resources. Like ALL ESL books, they don't include enough exercises or practices, but a thoughtful teacher or tutor can make more of his/her own for students based on the ones presented. I like the material he includes very much. I like THE WORDS -- because they are common, everyday English that native American English speakers KNOW and use all the time -- and I like the concept. I look through the books and I know EVERY WORD so far. But the person I tutor does not….and right away, I know we are on the right path to fluency.In addition, so far I have been extremely pleased with Perfect Paperback, which is supplying these books. They send them fast and I get them fast. $24.00 per book is a little pricey -- but I believe these are worth it. I buy 2 copies of each book, one for me and one for the student I tutor. So -- if you are looking to teach English vocabulary as the collection of words YOU learned as an English-speaking American, and the collection of words that an immigrant needs to be successful and COMFORTABLE with English in America, I think this is a great place to start.
