Nature’s reality show
This isn't your average science project, it's a crash course in life, death, and messy wings. My kids learned about the butterfly life cycle, but they also learned that not everything comes out perfectly. We ended up with a few unique butterflies, which became the family pets for a hot minute. It’s a great way to teach empathy and responsibility, with the bonus that the not all pets live long enough to become a chore. Fantastic, slightly chaotic lesson in life and nature. Also, meet Rose.

Caterpillars came quickly and all survived to butterflies
Got the caterpillars quickly. I did this for fun but have used in the past for homeschooling education. Fun activity for kids, and adults, of all ages.

Great product / reliable shipping
We live in Alaska. I was worried if the caterpillars would survive the trip. They made it safe and sound! Every single one of them survived and thrived. I was very impressed.

My 4 year old loved this.
We received 6 caterpillars which all went into the cocoon. Only 5 hatched but that’s great to get 5/6 butterflies to release.

Great customer service
We have ordered caterpillars the past 6 years. Usually we get 7 caterpillars per cup (x2) and have been lucky enough to be able to release all 14 butterflies. This last order we were not so lucky. We had 2 cups (14 caterpillars total), but some of the caterpillars did not make it, some didn't make it through the chrysalis phase, and then a couple butterflies died before being released (after a few days). We were only able to release 3. We were bummed. Never had that happen before. We reached out to the seller and within days, they sent us 14 caterpillars! I know they can't control what happens to these live critters, but really appreciated the fact that we get a second try. (Guaranteed 6). Great customer service.

Do NOT buy. These are not normal caterpillars.
I normally get my caterpillars from another company and have had great experiences but I thought I would try this one because it was a little cheaper. I was very disappointed with this experience. 2 of the caterpillars died and 1 of them came out deformed. When I received the caterpillars they came in a flimsy white cardboard box. It didn’t even say anything on it with regards to handling it with more care and it was shoved into our mailbox. When I opened the dented box the caterpillar jar was surrounded by styrofoam peanuts. There were 7 caterpillars in a small jar and the holes for air looked too small as well. I wanted to make the holes bigger but I didn’t want to disrupt the process and I felt I should trust this company. They all went into Chrysalis form fairly quickly but one never made it to the top and formed a chrysalis at the bottom of the jar while another caterpillar seemed to just die. I waited a whole day to be sure not to damage the chrysalises and then I transferred them to the enclosure. I was hoping that the motionless caterpillar at the bottom of the jar just needed more time but he turned out to be dead as I suspected. I carefully transferred the chrysalis at the bottom of the jar to a dry napkin in the enclosure. When two butterflies emerged one of them came out with crinkled wings and the other seemed normal. 3 more emerged normal. The last chrysalis turned black. The butterfly with the crinkled wings cannot fly. It can only crawl around. My kids have started calling him potato chip. This experience was not what I had wanted to share with my children. I’m even afraid that releasing these butterflies will cause genetic mutations to occur amongst the wild butterflies. This company is careless and obviously not doing something right. I have read the reviews of other customers and they have had exactly the same if not worse experiences. Amazon should not be allowing this company to sell on their platform. It’s cruelty to animals and it should be stopped.

Great for teaching about the life cycle
I bought these for my class and they loved it! We got the caterpillars in the containers (I bought 2 sets) and there were several in each one, with all of the food needed to get them to the chrysalis stage. Once I opened the container and put the fabric from the inside of the lid up in the habitat, a few came detatched and had to lay on the bottom of the habitat. I wasn't sure how to reattach them, so I looked on Google and it said to just put them on a paper towel. They did metamorphosize, but wings were deformed and they couldn't fly. We even tried helping to straighten or fan out the wing, but to no avail... That's ok though, because once it "passed" we were able to use the wing under the microscope to look closely at the structure. I'll definitely buy these again, and will research some more about what to do for the ones that fall off.
