Great book but with limited scope
For full transparency I will mention up front that I was sent a complimentary copy of this book with the request to give an honest review. Additional transparency as far as my artistic skill I am a complete beginner, only now in my retirement learning to draw. However, one thing in my favor seems to be an above average ability to draw what I see. Now, on to the review:It seemed to me with my lack of experience the best review I could give would be to see if I could follow Mr. Hart’s directions and draw a recognizable figure from his book. To test this, I selected 3 random pages to attempt to draw. I spent less than one-hour total on the 3 pages I selected. The results are found in the photos attached to this review. While Marvel isn’t going to be calling me to become a resident artist, I believe you can see Mr. Hart’s instructions and illustrations in this book were sufficient for me to make a decent drawing. In fact, in the skirt drawing I even made a slight modification giving the drawing model a crop top.In addition, I found the written text and hints very helpful to my learning style giving me two points of gaining needed information, both visual and written. The text helped me several times in creating the drawings.I have only given the book 4 stars for a complaint that actually isn’t a fair complaint as the book description clearly states, “…this is the guide every aspiring fashion designer needs for learning to draw their most fabulous creations.” For me, in my journey to learn to draw this limits the usefulness of this book. The world in this book is a Barbie & Ken doll world, filled with illustrations of young, healthy, beautiful people walking down runways (as advertised). Quite a limited scope (ergo 4 stars). I would suggest a book of real people, and their clothes, doing real life things. How do bodies and the clothes they wear look on old people? Chubby people? People sitting in chairs? Hiking up a hill? Working in a garden? Grilling a steak in the backyard look?In the end, if you are looking to learn to draw the fashion plate world, I can highly recommend this book it does have sufficient information for a beginner to follow to success. If you are a beginner and need something with a little more diversity, this book will not be as helpful as you might like.
