The blueChick is a CNC machine kit capable of routing an area of 12"x36" with a total of 3" of z-axis travel. The version 4.2 was developed to provide an alternative drive method, locate the x-axis motor in a more appropriate location, increase the gantry structure and reduce the overall height of the machine. Additionally, the router selected for this machine is the Porter Cable 892 series of routers.

Nice machine and a fun (but not inexpensive) project.
The unit was delivered promptly and was easy to assemble following the (pretty good) online assembly videos. I called Buildyourcnc.com twice--once before ordering and once to clarify the shipping schedule--and was very impressed by their service-oriented attitude. You do have to search their web site for basic info about wiring up the unit and I still haven't found an illustration concerning best practices for routing the motor control wires and limit switches--but there are numerous links to additional information that I'm way too lazy to read. (So I made my own choices, which seem fine.)I'll augment this review and submit some photos, too, when the machine is fully functional. I've decided to develop a custom host (PC) application and a custom controller using an Arduino Mega 2560 but most users will probably find the included controller that uses a PC parallel port to be very usable with the suggested Mach3 software ($159.00).
