Best cheese slicer for me
I have been using this type of cheese slicer for about 40 years. This is an updated version from same company. It is imported from Germany. Old one has held up wonderfully but I wanted a spare new one as well. The blade has been slightly modified but does seem sturdy. I purchased several for gifts for Christmas for friends and relatives. Although advertised as slicer for sausage, lettuce etc. I would say it is really best intended for cheese. You can slice paper thin slices if desired or thicker as needed. The dial for setting thickness is not useful for me since I find it easier and faster to just rest the cheese block along back and push along with my hand as I slice away. Works great for those Costco blocks of imported or domestic cheese although sometimes I need to divide into 2 pieces to fit on slicer. Although I am basing my review mostly on old slicer, I have now tried the new one and it seems to work as well. Cheese lovers will probably love this simple, efficient slicer as I have. Update December 2016. I now have about 42 years experience using this type of slicer. To address some comments I would like to say remember it is best as a cheese slicer although I sometimes use to thin slice onion or mushrooms. Just watch your fingers. Cut larger cheese blocks to manageable size, wrap the rest for another day and slice smaller piece. You can get paper thin cheese slices with some experience by learning to push cheese gently into direction of blade while watching your fingers. Cleaning has never been problematic. Buy a dish washing brush with handle to clean. Drip dry in dish rack. I use this several times a week and bought my second slicer 2 years ago expecting my plus 40 year slicer to break at some point. I now use both. Update March 2025. Yup, still going strong!

Fantastic Cheese Slicer!!
I am so impressed with this cheese slicer!! I have been looking for one that could handle a large block of cheese and looked through so many reviews and videos until finding this one that others had given great reviews for also. I wanted one that actually had a blade like a knife, and not one of those wires that stretch out and aren't precise. I also liked the fact that it is made in Germany. So I figured it was worth giving it a try and I was NOT disappointed!! I sliced an entire large block of cheese for sandwiches and it worked perfect every single slice! You can get a very very thin slice or a much thicker slice with an easy turn of the dial. And cleanup is very easy - just be careful when washing the blade because it is very sharp. Well worth it's price!!

Very nice slicer
First off don’t try to cut anything squishy it wasn’t made for squishy stuff. I really like this cheese cutter I’m cutting sharp cheddar 5-pound block and I’m cutting slices damn near paper-thin. I’ve been cutting bell pepper, celery, cheese, green beans, carrots, romaine lettuce, pretty much anything that goes in a salad other than a tomato. The list goes on and on I also cut almost paper thin potatoes slices for making potato chips. Thank God I don’t have to use any more wires that keep breaking. Cleaning is pretty much the same as anything, a damp cloth on the blade same with the cutting board. I am pretty sure it is okay to submerge underwater or put in the top rack of the dishwasher. I say that because there are not a lot of moving parts to have to worry about. The measuring tool works pretty good, even though it is plastic it is made well enough. Nothing flimsy about this cutting tool. I dialed the measuring tool to about two—counter clockwise to make thick slices and clockwise for thin. You are probably going to wonder, what side of the little window you use to measure with. You use the right side of the window as your guide. When you turn the dial all the way to zero you will see the zero on the right side of the window. You’ll know what I’m talking about once you do it. The guide is measured in centimeters. I checked it against one of my cloth measuring tapes. The cutting board itself is 8 ½ long and 5 ½ wide –--plenty enough room to cut on. It sits about an inch and a half tall and has little rubber feet. The blade is 5 ½ inches long so you get to use every bit of the blade. The blade does not come apart—it is riveted, and is very sharp so be careful. I don’t see any way of sharpening the blade itself so I hope it stays very sharp for a long time. The blade does not come in contact with any part of the board so I don’t see a problem with it staying sharp, as long as I am cutting just food. I read from another reviewer that his parents had one about 40 years ago, so evidently, they had been making this cutting board for a long time. I saw one of the pictures, and the old board was much smaller. I like this board it’s not too big a and is not too small—so it can be stored even in a drawer.

Better than I expected
The Westmark »Fromarex« slicer works great on cheese, which was the primary feature I was looking for. The cutter has a non-stick coating and cheese does not stick to it. It looks like it would be a good vegetable slicer, too, but I haven't tried using it for that yet. I was surprised by how much I like the adjustable stop for selecting slice thickness. One of those "I never knew that I always wanted this" experiences. It has a good adjustment range and makes it easy to make consistent slices and (if you want) thin slices. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the product. Things to consider before buying: * The cutter is very sharp and has no safety lock - handle with care and keep away from little fingers. * Cleaning is not easy, but it's not really difficult either. Not dishwasher safe, but can be immersed for hand washing or wiped clean without too much effort. * Cannot be disassembled without tools. Mostly plastic construction of good quality with some metal parts. There is a metal spring, shaft, and clip ring accessible from underneath that look like they may not be stainless. You might want to consider protecting those with food-grade mineral oil. * Looks like it might be easy to break. * Practical, but not beautiful * Most annoying thing: the slice that you cut off is not supported and drops onto whatever surface the slicer is on. I use mine on top of a large flexible plastic cutting mat and that works really well. Unless you use an arrangement like that, you will be slicing food directly onto your work surface. * Again, and I can't stress this enough: be careful how you pick up and handle this thing. Especially DO NOT PICK IT UP BY THE CUTTER, which is tempting to do. That blade hungers for human flesh.

Good for Slicing Cheese
This slicer works well when slicing cheese — especially cheeses like cheddar or Gouda that are not hard. However, I was unable to slice either a small eggplant or a 1.5” diameter zucchini. It did work well on baby zucchini. I was looking for a device that would evenly slice vegetables into 1/4” or slightly thicker slices but I’m sorry to say it didn’t work for my purpose. Normally I would not have reviewed an item that I ended up returning. However, in this case, I wanted to pass my experience on to anyone primarily interested in slicing vegetables. I do have a mandoline and will go back to using it. It’s not my favorite tool because I have to be very careful using one, but it certainly gets the job done.

It WORKS
I have a mandolin, I have a wire cheese slicer, I have one of those slide across the top slicers- I have a charcuterie board that up till today I’ve been adding shredded cheeses-veggies etc. That my family basically has to scrape onto plates and then transfer the shredded mess from plate to mouth- the teen boys discovered some uncharastic methods thus shambling my elegant dinner entree- a true amusè bouchè Now my arthritic hands have THIS slicer. It works! I can now without pain and without shredding everything to bits present an elegant party worthy charcuterie board! Thank you- product rates five stars for pain-free ease of use. The product rates five stars to creating perfectly sliced-cubed items (can use for all sorts of foods-the slicer rates five stars for construction. I compared other items- there are five stars for price point as the materials, engineering, design and functionality are far better than the models that cost a wee bit less. The price makes this well designed ergonomic tool a must for any modern kitchen. I would rate with a universe of stars if I could. This product is worth having . The product rates a billion stars for giving me a chance to teach the above mentioned teen boys a bit of manners whilst “enjoying” an elegant tea presented by grandma.
