If you are into birds this book is a beautiful record of the now gone species
A very interesting book, Mr. Fuller has collected pictures of animals no long around.( exceptions- Thylacine and some of the birds ) which brings me to the bias in this book. Fully half of it concerns birds and only a third treat with other creatures. The pictures of Thylacines (Despite the cover) are very important and well done, Why important, there have been sightings in Tasmania and Australia of an animal with stripes on the rear now for several years, and there is an ongoing search for these animals.Could these be surviving animals? Only time will tell.If you are into birds this book is a beautiful record of the now gone species, however,if you are looking for other vanished species, try another source.

fascinating creatures now only seen in the pages of a book or in our dreams.
I love this book. I find myself re-reading and looking at the paintings and photos of the animals I shall never see except in my dreams. I only wish the stellar's sea cow had been included. if you are a bird-lover, you will love this book. I'm not a bird-person, but still enjoyed reading about and looking at these long gone flying jewels. it's not too simplistic, or too hard to read. I have a couple of degrees in biology, and I'm still fascinated by it. such a heart-breaking subject. my nephews will never see these beautiful creatures. even though this is a sad topic, you won't regret this purchase.

Poignant and excellent
Striking. It really adds a weight to animals that you normally just see as a name on a list. Some of the pictures aren't great, but that is not the point. The point is that a bad picture are all that we have left as evidence of a unique species.Excellent for somebody in the biology field (such as myself); it is a reminder of why I do what I do. For somebody outside of the field but with an interest in animals, it's a reminder for why we should care.

Fascinating information.
Really enlightening and great pictures. Our world is constantly changing and being effected by us humans. This book shows us some of those changes. Great information and I truly learned a lot by reading it! I highly recommend it!

it just adds to the mystery and rarity of the animals and there's many great shots as well
I consider this to be a very special book! Gave to my son as a gift because he's very interested in animals and he instantly treasured it. I read some reviews criticizing the book for blurry pics and such, but to us, it just adds to the mystery and rarity of the animals and there's many great shots as well. A remarkable book worth owning or giving as a gift!

Lost Animal is for the birds
I don't know what I expected, but this book was disappointing. All the photographs and sketches were black and white and the descriptions were scientifically accurate I am sure but made dull reading. The book could more aptly be titled Lost Birds since very few other animals were included. An ornithologist would probably enjoy this book but I don't think it appeals to the layman.

Loved it !
Loved it.The grainy, out of focus photo of these extinct animals make it even more special as most of these animals were not considered rare or endangered at the time those photos were taken.

Haunting & Intriguing
Bought as a gift for my daughter; remarkable book with haunting photos. Breaks my heart that these amazing creatures no longer exist, mostly due to humans being very short-sighted. Excellent book for those who enjoy zoology, biology, anthropology, or unusual animals in general.

Could Have Been Brilliant
I was expecting a great book when I read the description and heard reviews of Mr. Fuller's previous book on extinct birds. However this book is not that good. The first thing I noticed was that the text was rather large, perhaps to make up for the lack of it. It seems as though very little information is given on anything. He glances over most species. It would have been a much better book had he gone into detail on each of the species and how they had perished. Granted, this wasn't possible for all species listed, but it would have at least added text. The pictures are ok, but nothing special, nothing you can't google. I was hoping for a great book, but was disappointed. Like the previous reviewer said, it seems more like a children's book. The price tag is nowhere near worth it.
