Spawn: Origins Book 3: Origins Collection: Collecting Issues 26-37 (Spawn Origins Collection, 3)

Spawn begins to wane
I'll speak a little about the stories in the issue first, though for many of you I imagine you're looking to Amazon to see whether it's worth upgrading your singles or trades to this hardcover edition. If that's what you're after head straight for the last two paragraphs. This edition collects issues #25-37 and in case this review ends up on the page for the paperback edition, that is not what's being reviewed. At this stage, Todd McFarlane was taking his readership for granted. The first 24 issues (collected as Volume 1 and Volume 2 steadily introduced new elements to the Spawn mythos, but over the course of its publication Spawn has suffered a few periods of absolute lack of direction, and the issues collected here are the first of those periods. It would be hyperbolic to say nothing happens in these issues, but not MUCH happens - Spawn continues to mill about the alleys of Rat City, receive cryptic messages from Cagliostro (never spelled the same way twice in this twelve-issue collection) and dispatch new and returning villains, but he doesn't learn anything new about himself and neither do we. His costume does go through the change from its initial stage to the more recognizable spiked version, but that's about all of note. There are a few decent stories that follow Spawn across the deep South of America (where he ends up after a miniseries not collected in this book) and really benefit from taking him out of the city setting but before you know it he's right back there again. There's a great period later in the run where he spends much more time in the countryside but there's something a little lacking here. Overwritten as ever, but there's no faulting the art which is completely gorgeous and, yes, I'll admit, worth owning the book for.If you're curious about this edition in particular, it's the same size as Marvel's oversized line (such as their Omnibus series). The artwork is printed on the book which doesn't come with a dust jacket and features a matte white with the image of Spawn battling The Curse in gloss. The book has a sewn binding which unlike the other six volumes released so far is actually quite flexible as it isn't glued to the spine, and the book lays completely flat right into the dead center. In terms of extras, there's snippets from interviews with Todd that act as a foreward and afterward as well as being interspersed between issues, and about 30 pages of extras which comprise original pencilled and inked pages, older trade covers and the Capullo covers for the two paperback Origins Collections. The spine for this volume is perfectly synchronous with those of the preceding and following books with only the numbering and the colour of the skull and text changed: for this collection, it is in green. All in all, it's a beautiful book and to date the nicest mass-produced version of these earlier stories. The Spawn Collection books that were in publication a few years ago were better value in that they contained twenty issues apiece and cost less, but these volumes are gorgeous, uniform and for the first time for Spawn collections, tastefully executed. Well worth the upgrade or for a first time buy. The series does get better (then worse again!) from here onwards but it's at least worth having either for a complete set or just to look at.ALTERNATIVES____________You can also get these stories in two smaller paperbacks with the same trade dress - Spawn Origins Volume 5 and Spawn Origins Volume 6 - and issues #13-#33 are available in an older and much thicker edition as Spawn Collection Volume 2 , which has come down in price considerably since these newer white editions hit the racks.***As ever, I keep an eye on the comments section, so if you'd like to know anything about the book please ask below.***

An amazing series continues.
Spawn is easily one of the best IPs to come out of the 90s. And to still be going strong is a testament to how good this series is.Great story and characters. Greg Capullo's art is top shelf and the paper quality really lets it shine. The only negative with these deluxe editions is how hard they are to find now. Volume 3 appears to only be available in German so take heed.

tolle Hardcover Kollektion

Favorite volume from 1-4
Writing, pacing, and art are quite excellent. Tons of action and progress on the main story line.Of the first four Origins Hardcopy volumes, this is my favorite.

Perfect Spawn Run in HC Continues!
Issues 38-50. Series is really getting into its stride, especially with Capullo taking a bigger and bigger role. Quality of the books themselves also seem to improve with each release!

Very nice artwork and an excellent plot that builds a lot ...
This volume is where the story starts to really pick up. Very nice artwork and an excellent plot that builds a lot off of previous events.

Excellent quality, nice binding, great transition page art!
Great quality through and through! I no longer collect individual comics. This is a great way for an older, post collector, to touch base with Todd McFarlane's art & the Spawn story.
