Maison Ikkoku Collector's Edition, Vol. 1

The entire Maison Ikkoku Viz Signature Edition collection is a joy! While maybe not as popular as Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma 1/2 or Urusei Yatsura series, in this reader's humble opinion Maison Ikkoku beats them both in charm and sheer "slice of life" delight. I cannot express the amount of laughs and grins this lighthearted, romantic comedy gave me as I read vignette after vignette. Each one slowly, and I do mean SLOWLY, progressing the story of our main protaganists and the rest of the residents of Maison Ikkoku. However, despite the slow burn, you will find yourself charmed by this wonderful manga! 10/10!

I loved this series! I own all 10 collector’s editions. I read the series back in 2022, I think it’s time for a reread! 10/10 recommend the series to all Rumiko Takahashi fans, and fans of romantic comedy!

Ever wanted to know what Rumiko Takahashi printed BEFORE Ranma 1/2? Or Inuyasha? This is one of her first series after Urusei Yatsura. We all know that the action and elements from Ranma and Inuyasha are comedic, fantasy/myth based, and will remain as classic stories in our hearts. Maison Ikkoku will also have some those elements of comedy. Although it doesn't have the fantasy elements we see in her later works. It is a slice of life series, it focuses on romance, comedy and misunderstandings. It will remain a classic in my heart and I love that it's being released as a collector's edition. Everybody deserves to see one of her early works.

This is Viz's new collector's edition release of Maison Ikkoku. It contains 2 volumes in one book. The paper quality is excellent, the outer sleeve has a nice texture and high quality feel to it, well worth the price. The front of the volume has 3 color images along with translation notes in the back of the book. You can tell a lot of time and effort went into this new edition. Maison Ikkoku is a perfect blend of comedy and romance that always leaves you wanting more. I recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Rumiko Takahashi's other works. Maison Ikkoku has a more serious feel to it compared to some of Takahashi's other series, such as Ranma 1/2 or Urusei Yatsura, but the humor is present and always manages to make me laugh.

The manager is a cute gal. So are the rest of the girls in this. Such wonderful illustrations. I really fell into this story. I am greatly looking forward to the next volume. A heads up, the Mangaka who created this is also the creator of Ranma 1/2 & Inuyasha, as well as other fantastic series.

Wow! I'm absolutely loving this series so far. I'm a huge fan of Inuyasha but never read Rumiko Takahashi's other work. And now I want to read it all.

Hats off to Viz for publishing a new version of Rumiko Takahashi’s comedy Maison Ikkoku. The new edition is almost perfect with its gorgeous matte cover, nice paper, and larger size. The book include several color illustrations and a new clean look. My only criticism being Viz did not publish the color pages for the manga. Instead we get the watercolor pages reproduced in black & white. VERY DISAPPOINTING! The story itself is awesome and it’s good to have this story available for new and old fans to discover or rediscover.

An elegant edition of this Rumiko Takahashi's tender and funny love story. Read from right to left, last page to first page, as in perfect japanese fashion, it's very entertaining and I can't wait to buy the following booklets.

Pouco conhecido fora do círculo de fãs mais antigos de Rumiko Takahashi, Maison Ikkoku é uma comédia romântica (ou seria tragicômica) publicada originalmente no Japão entre os anos de 1980 a 1987 o que foi uma façanha notável para uma jovem mangaká que, na época já produzia outra série semanal de grande sucesso: Urusei Yatsura (1978~1987). Mais voltada para o público seinen (adultos na faixa dos 18~40 anos) essa série conta a história de Yusaku Godai, um jovem “ronin” (estudante que bombou na sua primeira tentativa de entrar na faculdade) na pindaíba que mora numa pequena pensão chamada “Maison Ikkoku” (em japonês Ikkoku-kan ou 一刻館) que também é habitada por um grupo bem eclético de tipinhos excêntricos, cuja maior diversão é se reunir no quarto de Godai para encher a cara e atazanar impiedosamente sua vida mesmo mesmo durante seus estudos. Esse inferno na terra (pelo menos para Godai) sofre uma grande mudança com a chegada da nova administradora da hospedaria — a jovem e bela Kyoko Otonashi — com quem ele prontamente se apaixona, mas como é de se esperar de uma comédia romântica japonesa, no início ela não dá bola pra ele e ele também não sabe como ficar mais próximo dela, sendo que muito da graça dessa série é que — como na vida real — o bom relacionamento surge e amadurece aos poucos em meio das atribulações do dia a dia e das peças que o destino prega especialmente na vida do Godai, como o surgimento da (que se acha a) namorada ideal e grudenta (Kozue Nanao), do rival perfeito, rico e grudento (Shun Mitaka), da aluna adolescente, admiradora platônica, perseguidora, obsessiva, meio louca e grudenta (Ibuki Yagami), etc. Uma das curiosidades dessa série é que a passagem do tempo tem um papel relevante na narrativa (Ikkoku em japonês significa “momento”) já que os acontecimentos meio que se desenrolam em sincronia com a época em que os capítulos foram originalmente publicados no Japão, ou seja, as histórias ligadas ao natal e ano novo sempre saíram no final de dezembro/início de janeiro de cada ano. Já os personagens também vestem roupas leves ou pesadas de acordo com as estações e ficavam mais velhas com o passar dos anos. Curiosamente, nessa série também é possível acompanhar o amadurecimento de Takahashi tanto como artista quanto como contadora de histórias, já que nos primeiros capítulos os traços da artista eram bem amadoras (para não dizer toscas) e os roteiros bem mais escrachados no estilo de Urusei Yatsura, mas com o passar dos anos a arte melhorou muito e as tramas se tornaram cada vez mais envolventes e criativas. De fato a evolução do traço de Takahashi pode ser notado nesse primeiro volume, onde podemos ver imagens de Kyoko feitas em três momentos da carreira de Takahashi: A fase inicial (no primeiro capitulo), intermediária (as páginas internas em cores) e a mais recente (na capa externa). Maison Ikkoku também não deixa de ser uma boa oportunidade de conhecer o Japão dos anos 1980 no ápice da sua prosperidade econômica, uma época de otimismo onde tudo parecia ser possível e a vida bem diferente antes do estouro da bolha, da popularização da Internet e do surgimento do smartphone. Eu particularmente gosto muito dessa série por ser relativamente curta (apenas 10 volumes nessa nova versão para colecionadores) e que mostra tanto o potencial artístico de Takahashi quanto sua capacidade de tirar água de pedra para contar uma boa história sem depender de subterfúgios ou escapismos como robôs gigantes, monstros espaciais, fantasmas de outro mundo ou garotas mágicas em trajes mínimos. Pena que as editoras brasileiras não tenham interesse em publicar essa e outras séries mais curtas da artista como Ningyo Shirīzu (Mermaid Saga) ou Ichi-Pondo no Fukuin (One Pound Gospel).

Rumiko Takahashi is one of favorite Japanese manga artist. Incredible how her stories and characters originally catered to Japanese audience reached global popularity. I remember watching couple of episode of the anime adaptation of this manga in 2015-16 , and said to myself I need to read the manga and quit watching the anime. Reading the Volume 1 and 2, I can the anime is a faithful adaptation this is a slow burn where you the plot is character. This is a fun read. Recommended to slice of life fans.

It is printed nicely and the story is good, I am thinking of buying the next volumn
