I found out that you need to use BOTH the amazon provided plug in and USB cable. What you're seeing is what happens when its trying to update. Go back to the originally provided units and the update will work. Then you can switch back to this device if you like.

No, you really don't need it for firestick. Just use the cord and adapter that came with it. I had my firestick for 2 years before this purchase. It's more convenient for me do to that I use the USB on tv for power than outlet plug. Hope this helps.
