Actually, there are NOT two different types of sideband. Upper and lower only refer to which side of the base frequency is used, in 100% of technical aspects, they are identical.

Q: It’s not advertised as such,does this radio cover 144-148 mhz, ie the 2 meter ham band (which is near “vhf aviation”)?

No it doesn't receive the 2 meter band.

Q: Is this the secongd generation radio that has addressed the problems in the initial production runs?

I have read online reviews of problems experienced with the initial production run of this radio and I have noticed none of these on the model I bought recently.
