Louder Than Words: Take Your Career from Average to Exceptional with the Hidden Power of Nonverbal Intelligence Review: A Helpful Look at Nonverbal Communication, Even If Some Skills Take Real Work to Apply - Louder Than Words was a really interesting read for me, and it opened my eyes to how much nonverbal communication affects the way people see you — especially in your career. The book dives into everything from body language to presence to subtle cues we don’t normally think about. A lot of the advice is solid and has made me more aware of how I carry myself in everyday interactions. What stood out to me: The author explains nonverbal concepts in a clear and practical way. There are plenty of real-world examples that make you think, “Okay, I can see exactly how that plays out in real life.” It definitely made me more conscious of the small things — posture, eye contact, tone — and how they can make a big difference in the way you’re perceived at work. It’s one of those books that stays in your mind when you’re interacting with people afterward. Where it falls short: While the advice is great, a lot of it is harder to implement than it sounds. Some of the nonverbal skills require consistent practice, self-awareness, and even training to fully apply. You can’t just flip a switch and suddenly master all of it. A few sections would have benefited from more step-by-step exercises or ways to build the habits gradually. Overall, though, the book is worth reading if you want to improve how you show up in your career and understand the “hidden” parts of communication that most people overlook. The insights are valuable — just know that turning them into action takes time and effort. Review: Accelerate your non verbal skills to the next level - I love this book for a quite a few reasons but to start with it starts out and sets up the explanation that everything counts, all of you interactions, your clothing, your attention to detail or lack of, and your interpersonal communications skills. In a noisy world with many choices some of yours are made without really understanding why, that also goes for your clients. I read just about every book that comes out on body language and this one is great and not just a rehash of the last one that came out a few months or years ago. In a very stimulated visual society we gravitate to symmetrical beautiful objects or people, and that is a lesson in itself. People also pick up on verbal communication skills just as much as looks, sloppy speaking or pronunciation will also lose a deal. Mirroring physically to gain comfort and rapport is just as important with verbal cues as it is for your vocal tones and words. The book does a great job of explaining how people will make their opinions based on your behaviors and that determines their buying decisions. The section on comfort vs. discomfort is discussed and explained and will give you an aha moment and give you some powerful insight on non verbal communication and is worth buying the book in itself. This book is very well written, thought out and in depth book, I wouldn't say that it is an easy read but more of an important anthology of non verbal communication you need to have in your library because of the knowledge you will gain. There are so many good things in this book that I am sure that reading a few times I could pick up some valuable tips that I passed over the first time. Buy some copies for you sales staff or anybody that talks to your clients. As you read this book you will question how many mistakes you make on a daily basis and find the fixes to change them for the better. So just how much money or clients have you lost in the past year, month or day? You will only know by reading and studying the book.

Informative, but some advice should be applied with caution
I found this book to be very informative and entertaining in general until I got to the part where the author says when you meet a person of Asian descent, you should bow. He thinks it makes the Asian person feel more comfortable. (It could work if you are "surrounded" by Japanese or Korean people visiting the U.S.) I personally feel that it is rather rude to single out a person, and greet in such a way that "stereotypes" the race that you assume that person belongs to. I have experienced this a few times in my life, and I felt very uncomfortable and even offended and hurt. Therefore, I felt that some of the advice on this book should be applied with great caution.

Great insight, Joe is a genius!
One of my favorites of Joe Navarro’s. All his books are great, but this one was especially useful.

A cop's eye view
Joe does a great job of bringing his 25 years of law enforcement experience into the corporate world. Having had my own 20 year career in law enforcement, I appreciated Joe's acknowledgement that deception is a difficult thing to ascertain on a definitive basis. Frequently you are seeing discomfort not necessarily a lie, perhaps due to the nature of the question asked or the subject being discussed. But, as he so aptly points out, that discomfort can ultimately lead you in the right direction. In the boardroom or in the office, working on the nonverbal cues (body language) you are giving off are every bit, if not more important, than what you are seeing in others. How you consciously use your own body language and the seating arrangement in your office to establish rapport is critical. After my post law enforcement career, I've spent the last two decades in the corporate world. I've put the experience I picked up in law enforcement to good use when working with clients and colleagues, as well as all the great information I've learned from all of Joe's books. One colleague has been wondering for 20 years how I know when he is ready to wind down the conversation after he's stopped by for a visit (his tell is in his right foot). He always is surprised when I know it's just the right time to end the conversation. Drives him nuts, but then he hasn't reads the book! One of the beauties of the Kindle version are the imbedded short videos in each section. This is the first book I have run across that has this kind of content and it's a nice break from the reading.

This is the first book of Joe Navarro's that I have read and I will certainly putting his others on my reading list. This book is very well written and easy to read - once I started, I found it difficult to put it down. I read Body Language: How to Read Others' Thoughts by Their Gestures (Overcoming common problems) many years ago and found it fascinating, but Joe Navarro looks at non-verbals communication in a much wider context. The book doesn't just cover body language, but covers the wider issues of how organisations interact with the customers - everything from how your office is designed to the way your website performs. The approach to analysing non-verbal communication is vastly simplified from others that I have seen. This approach is much easier to put into practice since it makes reading the signals much easier in real time. If you are new to the subject, this book would be a good starting point. I particularly liked the last chapter where Joe provides example interactions from everyday situations. I would have liked to have seen this section expanded. They might just be anecdotes, but they put the material in the book into context and brings the material to life. Great reading and very useful material. Highly recommended.
