Gypsy - A Musical Fable 1959 Original Broadway Cast

Ethel Merman was the original Mama Rose in the original Broadway production of this classic musical, "Gypsy." Jack Klugman (Television's Oscar Madison on "The Odd Couple series" and "Quincy") played Herbie, Mama's love interest. The actress played Louise who became Burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee. is terrific as well but overshadowed by Mama Rose's Ethel Merman.I was lucky to see Tony Award winner Tyne Daly (Cagney & Lacey) to play Mama Rose on Broadway in 1991. This original soundtrack was recorded in 1959 long before my time so I wasn't able to see the original production. Ethel Merman was truly a star, a Broadway star with robust talent and a voice to capture everybody's attention. In listening to this recording, I am amazed by Ethel's strong robust voice in capturing the heartbreak and complexity of Mama Rose."Gypsy" is a classic musical and has been performed ever since 1959 with other leading ladies in the role but nobody could beat Ethel Merman's Mama Rose. Like most musicals, "Gypsy" has evolved and changed over time since the original production. "Gypsy" became a Broadway hit and sensation with Ethel Merman in the role. The story and relationship of the ultimate stage mother, Mama Rose, and her two daughters, June and Louise in the show business.

I was thrilled that Amazon had the CD of the original broadway cast of Gypsy. I had an old cassette of Gypsy which was barely audible. I was going to see a production of Gypsy at a Summer theater and I wanted to refresh my memory of all the tunes. I received the CD within 3 days and I was very pleased in that the recording had been upgraded and the sound was great!! Thanks Amazon!!

GYPSY had to be one of the best musicals on Broadway in my opinion. I bought this for my sister also and she really appreciated it alot. The music is classicand all songs memorable for sure. Again, its a MUST for your collection if you are a Broadway buff!

"GYPSY" is in my top 10 favorite musicals of all time. And hearing Ethel Merman on this recording is goose-bump heaven. This is truly a magnificent recording and I recommend it to everyone who enjoys good musical theatre.

The original Broadway recording is far and away the best!The quality of the CD is excellent, the delivery was veryfast and the extra songs on the CD are super to hear!
