Can anyone provide the dimensions of the lower shelf? Is it deep enough for a laptop?

Its probably about 14 inches deep. It's honestly a little shallow for my laptop to sit on and to be able to tilt the screen back far enough to be functional.

Would this make a good tween desk? Is it very sturdy?

Yes. The desk is very sturdy. It is a bit narrow so working on a laptop is pretty tight.

What is the height of the bottom of the desk

From the floor to bottom ledge is 24.25 inches. My stool with cushion is 18inches and it seats me at the perfect height.

Is the top finished and without holes so that you could leave the top hutch part off the desk?

The hutch is attached and cannot be removed.
