One of best classic electromagetics texts available
One of the first (if not the first) e/m texts to discuss, in detail, double-negative metamaterials, a topic which has caught my interest, Balanis is unique in covering a number of other topics: for instance reflection and transmission in layered media. The coverage on waveguides seems a little excessive for a basic e/m text, but it's nice to have all those formulas in one place. The new edition seems to have a lot more than the first, but is easier to handle - that edition seemed alsmost ready for two voumes. Balanis was the text used in the EE e/m course I took and I note a lot of familier problems, some of which are very helpful in understanding concepts (unlike those in another text I'm thinking of, which makes each problem a hurdle to mount). I haven't tried the website but it looks exciting.

The introductory chapters are well written and give nice insights into material properties and how those properties translate ..
This book is an exhaustive resource for all things electromagnetics - especially as applied to engineering. The introductory chapters are well written and give nice insights into material properties and how those properties translate into the EM phenomena we observe. Free-space propagation, as well as waveguide modes for a variety of geometries, are also covered in depth. The book really shines with it's treatment of diffraction, offering multiple methods and Matlab scripts for canonical problems (the book you buy may not come with the computer software, make sure to check if that's something you need)

Comprehensive book on Electromagnetics
This book offers a comprehensive collection of subjects (from very basic to advanced ones) to be used by engineers that work on EM, mainly on high frequency EM fields. Many chapters cover subjects in a detailed way, with demonstrations and great variety of cases. It is a very good reference book to have on your hands.

Great content, bad production.
The content of this book is fantastic if you plan on delving into more advanced EM topics for the purposes of RF Engineering applications etc…but as other reviews have mentioned, the production of this book is not up to par. The pages are not properly bound and glued to the cover of the book, leading to a flimsy design that will easily rip apart if you do not take care of it like it’s your baby. This is not acceptable for something listed on Amazon as being “New”.

Great Reference Text
This book is difficult if you are using it to learn electromagnetics. Very advanced. But it is extremely useful as a reference book. Great addition to an engineers library.

Useful for EM physics reference
I am an engineer working in electromagnetic effects. I have this in addition to several other references that I regularly use. I have used other books by balanis for classes as well. This book develops topics in advanced EM very well.

Bleed through issues
My particular book has a really bad problem with ink bleeding through the pages and is really prominent if there is a graph or figure on the other side of the page. I would expect this if it was the oversea version of the book but it is not. I hope they fix this issue before the 3rd edition comes out.
