A “life-saver” for my old lathe.
I have a 20 year old Central machinery 36” lathe I purchased from Harbor Freight for about $200. It’s not a $2,500 Jet lathe, but it is a substantial piece of iron. The weak spot in this lathe is the Reeves drive, a set of variable diameter pulleys. These pulleys are made of a cast base metal and are very brittle. They are very prone to failure and, because the lathe has been discontinued, parts are no longer available. My only option was to try to find step pulleys to replace the old drive. I almost gave up, when I found this step pulley. I ordered a 16mm bore for the motor and a 25 mm bore for the spindle. I had to drill and tap set screws into the pulleys to secure them to the shafts. I also had to shim the pulley for the spindle, since I couldn’t get one the exact size. I also had to trim the lathe housing to make room for the spindle pulley. Everything came together well. I just need to work out an adjustable motor mount, modify the shield cover for the pulley drive for safety, and the lathe will be back in business. The pulley is very well machined and, being aluminum, very strong. It was also very reasonably priced. I am very happy how this project has turned out.

Please do not purchase unless you are willing tomachine
The step pull is not solid and can only be mounted on a motor from the small pulley side, unless you have four inches of shaft on the motor. There is a keyway broached into the pulley however no threaded hole for a set screw. Unless you have access to a machine shop or are willing to free hand drill and tap, this unit, is just not worth the funds.
