Comprehensive, yet dry
This is a pretty comprehensive look at pirates from the first "Sea Peoples" through the Buccaneers, the "Golden Age," and into the modern era. And for that, it is surprisingly unique in the available literature. That said, the writing is rather dry. It contains a lot of names and dates and expeditions but the author doesn't weave much of a story into the events and I found myself skimming through a lot of the book. Also, the accounts aren't always as well researched. For example, much of the Buccaneers chapter parrots much of the work of Alexander Exquemelin without bringing in alternative perspectives or giving any account of the viability of Exquemelin's accounts. As a compliment, I've been listening to "The Pirate History Podcast" and have found a wealth of information missing from this book along with a better narrative take.I would recommend this book as a reference, but not as an entertaining history read.

It is not a bad book, just not what I was looking for
I wanted more of a review in the Carribean Pirates and how they affected the economy and lifestyle of the English settlements amoung the islands. This book is a light over view of the complete history of pirates. It is not a bad book, just not what I was looking for.

You won't be disappointed.
This was the second book I read on pirates. Angus knows his history. Another fascinating read of those times in history. Pick it up. You won't be disappointed.

Five Stars
Really enjoyable read reaching back further than I had imagined into the mists of time.

Good Survey
Good survey of Pirate history, not going into great depth, but with enough footnoting and information to give you a general understanding of the period. More emphasis given to the Golden Age than other eras, probably because it is a sexier time period. I would read another book from this author.

A Comprehensive Guide to Pirates throughout time!
Love this book! Using this as our key reference for our 'Pirate' Pro-D day camps. Well-written, and up-to-date history of pirating through-out time. LOVE the final chapter, debunking what we think we know about pirates, thanks to more recent story-telling courtesy of Disney et al.:)

I thought this was an excellent treatment of the subject
I thought this was an excellent treatment of the subject. Worth the time to read for anyone interested in pirates throughout the ages, and helpful particularly for laying out the context of piracy as it has developed over time. Konstam successfully manages to cut through the romantic image to give us a glimpse at the worlds of pirates around the world.
