Fascinating Read!
Not my usual fare and I didn't read it immediately but once I started I couldn't put it down. Lovely to learn some of the history of China.

I learned a lot
Very interesting read, there was a lot I did not know about the opium wars. This story made it easier to understand.

If its good for Britain...
Mr. Wang has written an outstanding novel that captures the culture of colonialism as it was meted out by Great Britain, and as a sidebar hasn't the Communist party of China learned well.

Wonderful story about that era. It had historical facts, love, pain, heartbreak, surprise...all good traits for a nice read. I will read this author again.

Compelling historical novel about opium in Hong Komg
I enjoy reading a book by someone I know personally. Robert Wang is a golfing buddy and successful business man. I am an eye surgeon and my brain functions in science. Tobert has a creative side to his brain that functions in a way I cannot comprehend. He researched the history of Englands role in supplying opium to the chinese resulting naturally in addiction in exchange for tea and silk for England. He developed believable characters like the opium lords rebellious daughter, her brother and the Engishman who supplied the opium but fellbun love with the daughter. This all took place in the 1800s and eventually led to war between the mighty British empire and the hopelessly overmatched Chinese. Thousands of Chinese were killed and Britain ruled Homg Kong for years. Although the story is fiction the historical facts were carefully researched. I read the book virtually nonstop in a day or so. I can visualize this book becoming a movie and I congratulate my friend on creating this story which educates many of us about a period in history we are ignorant about. James J. Salz, M. D.

Great book
Excellent combining of history and fiction. I was sorry when it ended.....characters seemed very real to me and I hope to read more by this author.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS.
I rarely read a book a second time, but I made an exception in this case. Yes, it may have an unrealistic storyline in the love between a Chinese girl and an English sailor β and, in her refusal to have her feet bound, but it gave me great insight into a period of history I was never taught in school.
