The Pope Of Greenwich Village Mickey Rourke (Sin City), Eric Roberts (Runaway Train) and Daryl Hannah (Blade Runner) "create emotion-charged characters who tingle with energy and play with conviction", (The Hollywood Reporter) in this modern-day classic. In New Yorks Little Italy, smooth-talking hustler Charlie (Rourke) works in a restaurant and dreams of one day buying his own with his girlfriend Diane (Hannah). His wiry wheeler-dealer cousin Paulie (Roberts) waits tables, skims money off checks and is always scheming to score big. But theyre all about to pull a scam on the wrong guy: Eddie (Burt Young, Rocky), the Mafia King of Greenwich Village! Now these small-time con men are in big-time trouble: trouble so big that even their mobster uncle might not be able to save them! Desperate Hours From Oscar winner Michael Cimino (1978 Best Director, The Deer Hunter) comes this taut psychological thriller about a family held hostage in their own home. In dire need of a hideout, escaped convict Michael Bosworth (Mickey Rouke) uses his charming smile to gain entry into the posh home of Nora and Tim Cornell (Mimi Rogers and Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins) and their two children. While waiting for his beautiful lawyer-turned-accomplice (Kelly Lynch) to arrive, Bosworths smile soon explodes into homicidal rage when the Cornells desperately try to fight back. Holding the family at gunpoint and ruthlessly pitting husband against wife, Bosworths fury escalates into a shocking night of terror and cold-blooded murder. Finally, the family is forced to take a stand that will either destroy them... or unite them as never before.

Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts and Daryll Hannah all in their prime!
Shout! Factory double feature Blu-ray.I'd liken this to Martin Scorcesse's Mean Streets - part Mob story, crime story, coming of age (in your 20s) story, great drama, great comedy.Great slice of life set in NYCs Little Italy/ Greenwich Village. Based on Vincent Patrick's classic novel, Patrick also wrote the screenplay. Directed by Stuart (Cool Hand Luke) Rosenberg, who always did great work with his actors.Released when Roberts was making films like Star 80 and Runaway Train. Rourke starring in films such as Body Heat and Diner. Hannah broke out in the classic comedy Splash - she's lovely in this one, too. (she's seldom fully dressed BTW) Co-star Geraldine Page was nominated for an Oscar for one of the most foul-mouthed (and funny) performances ever. This was her last role. The late, prolific character actor, Jack Kehoe (Midnight Run, Melvin and Howard), is also terrific.Aside from Jack Kehoe, this film is stocked with familiar NYC character actors ("hey, it's that guy"), who've collectively been in a zillion movies and TV/Cable shows.Truly a great film.Desperate Hours. Haven't seen this remake of the underrated Bogart thriller. Besides Mickey Rourke, it co-stars Kelly (Drugstore Cowboy, Roadhouse) Lynch, Mimi (The Rapture) Rogers and Anthony Hopkins. Directed by Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Year of the Dragon... and Heaven's Gate. Make of that what you will.)If nothing else, it might be an entertaining curio, we'll see.Great value, it's great to see "Pope" -finally! - on Blu-ray.

A one man tour-de-force of
It was a sheer travesty ofcinematic justice that Mickey Rourke was denied the Best Actor oscar for this film. He out-Brando'sBrando! This is theaactorwho, had he had been around atthe time, should've playedTerry Malloy in "On theWaterfront"! Marlon WHO!? Was there ever a more visceral performer than Rourke! You can FEELMickey's blood coursing through his veins in "Pope"but I admit I hated the wayit ended! Too ridiculous and trite..compared with what came before it!

I'd never see POPE... - which I watched first. It was really good and Eric Roberts plays a similar character to his RUNAWAY TRAIN role. Unfortunately RUNAWAY TRAIN is a limited release so if you can find it, check it out. BUT this is a Mickey Rourke set. He was excellent in POPE... the bonus features explains how prepared for the role and worth time to watch. The reason I bought this movie is I love Rourke in DESPERATE HOURS. It's a remake of the Bogie movie. I saw it when it came out years ago I had the Laser Disc then the DVD which I sold off when the Blu was released. The cast is excellent and even if you know the film (via Bogie) it's great to is Rourke swing from being what seems nice to being a cold blooded killer.

3 of 5 stars....
I had never seen either of these movies, but really like Mickey Rourke. They were different, but I thought Mr Rourke saved both movies. He is one of the greatest most under rated actors in modern cinema.

Great characters, especially Eric Roberts
Bought mainly for The Pope of Greenwich Village. i remember seeing it on HBO in the late 80's and really enjoying it. Great characters, especially Eric Roberts.Desperate hours is good, but has the chore of following The Bogart classic and comes off as a sub par remake. Maybe if you haven't seen the original it seems much more engrossing. I enjoyed it without seeing the original. Now that I have,it seems like a slight variation on a familiar story.Rourke's always good, very gifted actor.

The Pope of Greenwich Village is probably Mickey Rourke's best movie ever
The Pope of Greenwich Village is probably Mickey Rourke's best movie ever. Barfly and The Wrestler come at a close 2nd and 3rd place. This is the first time it's been available on BluRay. For Mickey Rourke fans this is a must see and a must have, period! It includes Desperate Hours, which is an unremarkable, sub-standard movie but it's basically free since you're paying for The Pope. Great BluRay transfer of a modern day classic film!

Always a fun movie to watch
Always a fun movie to watch..! I have seen it many many times and am glad I now have it on DVD as well as an old VHS tape,. Everytime I am in Little Italy in NYC I think of this movie and the "Summer Wind", by Frank Sinatra.!

If you like Mickey Rourke, this set is worth it alone for "The Pope of Greenwich Village"
If you like Mickey Rourke, this set is worth it alone for "The Pope of Greenwich Village", "Desperate Hours" is an okay thriller from Michale Cimino as one of his last films before his self-imposed retirement. You'll be happy to know each film is on it's own disc, so this is a 2 disc set.
