Espresso Tamper
I had been using an old plastic tamper for my espresso machine. Many reviews claimed that a good tamper was necessary for good results. You can pay a lot of cash for a fancy tamper. This one was quite affordable. It was designed to fit the basket, and it does that. I probably don't get any higher compaction with this device. However, the tamper, when twisted, makes a very uniform puck. The thickness is quite constant, a good thing. I suspect that there is more crema, and the overall process seems more uniform. I used to go to Starbucks of a local shop now and then for a hit. Actually I got spoiled and the stuff I make a home seems far better. The tamper certainly helps.

Love this! Feels like I am working at CBTL at age 19 again!
The quality of this tamper and ergonomic feel is awesome. Also the smooth convex bottom allows for grains of coffee to only minimally if at all stick to it so it's usually clean and hassle free. It's also gorgeous unlike the commercial eye-sores that look like unpolished aluminum paper weights... However, I do wish it was a true ruby red look instead of the reddish on top and the pinkish red around the center. But that's just a preference and nothing to do with functionality. Slightly overpriced... but Highly recommended.

I give it a bad review, but this really was the best tamper ...
Normally when something I bought less than a year ago breaks, I give it a bad review, but this really was the best tamper I have used and I was really bunned when it broke in half. I swear it was never dropped or abused. We only ever used it for tamping. Still, I have to wonder it a solid metal tamper would have avoided these disappointments. I'm going to try superglue.

Nice tamper, especially for the price
The tamper is fantastic for the money. I can't imagine how much better a more expensive device that compacts coffee would be. I mean, this one's pretty, heavy, smooth and inexpensive. It's also made well. Plus, it compacts coffee. Why would someone pay 80 dollars more? (For example, this one. ) Maybe to get artwork that isn't any more functional, I suppose.I haven't used many tampers, so I can't tell you how I would improve it. I guess if I had a gripe, I would wish that the handle was a little wider at the top. But then again, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, and it's perfect. Any way, if you're in the market for a good, cheap (as in "not expensive") tamper, buy this one. Mine's red and it's lovely.BTW, I'm using it with a Gaggia Classic and it fits nearly perfectly in the basket. One more thing: despite the poorly-lit photograph Amazon uses, the red tamper is not at all pink. It's red. So, all you men, go ahead an order it in that color; there's nothing to fear...

Bottom is too convex
Tamper is Ok for function and good for the price. I expect that it will last for many years. However the bottom is too convex and I wish that it was closer to 58 mm. Should I buy another tamper to replace this one, I will not be so frugal.

A Good Deal
This tamper is very nice. It looks and feels good, and is ergonomically correct. The metal is finely polished, the plastic is brightly colored. It works well. I was surprised however, when it arrived that it had a convex tamping surface (curved rather than flat). I had never used one like this. But it works well, and has produced some really good espresso.I bought a much cheaper tamper before and got pretty much what I paid for. It wasn't the right size and was a rough cast aluminum. For an extremely simple device it didn't work well. Now that I know what a quality tamper looks and feels like, I can tell this is a good one. You can certainly buy a more expensive tamper, but you really don't need to.

light weight and it broke.
This works great though it is very light weight. So no help from the tamp on that side of things but it's convex surface pulls great shots... It scratches easy but fits a 58mm portafilter nicely. I'd buy another if they made it from a heavier material. We use it at our coffee shop.Update: the handle broke off.

The tamper works great. It's not perfectly shaped
The tamper works great. It's not perfectly shaped. You can feel the misshapen top part. The bottom seems relatively even, so it's not a big deal. For the price, you can't go wrong. It's not fitting exactly within my portafilter basket, but maybe I need a 59mm one instead?

Good quality item
I purchased this because you only get a plastic tamper with a £600 coffee machine. To make good coffee you need to exert approx 30 LBS pressure.. This cannot be done with a plastic tamper. The quality id good, nice convex polished surface and the colour matches my machine.

great tool
The tamper is perfect for me the coffee is much more level in the basket and the price was very reasonable.
