Is this item safe for microwave and does it have a flip up straw?

No, it is stainless steel so not microwave safe. No it doesn't have a flip up straw, but you can insert a straw if you wish. I have bought many of these...they keep things hot or cold for hours. A must have

why wont my lid open all the way?

Without looking at it, that is a tough question. The tab only goes up far enough for the little ball to drop down and allow liquid to flow through. If it does not allow for contents to flow through or not enough, I would return and reorder. That would be rare. I have several of these and love the Contigo more than any other bottle. Great for hot beverages as well as cold.
