Grandma and the Great Gourd: A Bengali Folktale

Interesting and well told Indian folk tale. Has a fun verse kids can repeat with the reader. The illustrations are very good -- bright and clear color. Good for school units on tales from other cultures. So many fun activities to go along with the story make this a great addition to a classroom library.I am familiar with the author's adult works -- this is the only picture book I could find by her. I would like to see some more from this author & illustrator.

My 2 year old LOVES this story, the onomatopoeia and illustrations almost as much as I love reading it to him. I bought this with my love of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's writing in mind and her retelling of this Bengali folktale does not disappoint. Coupled with Susy Pilgrim Waters' illustrations, the resourcefulness of Grandma is transformed into a magnetic and magical experience.

This book was much loved by me and my daughters. The folk tale is something I have grown up with but the author's narration makes the book timeless.Two remarkable features of the book for me were the use of onomatopoeia and the vibrant colors in each page.Prefect for 3-8 year olds

I enjoyed reading it to my 7th grade students. It was not too long, easy to understand and we could compare it to other folk tales we have read from other cultures.

This book has a cute storyline and is appropriate for kids of all ages. I really am glad I bought two.

A great read-aloud! This book has a pattern and rhythm that will keep children involved and wanting to hear more. The lively illustrations add to the joy. I bought one to read aloud in my library and will need to get another because the first one already has a wait list. I hope Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni will write some more Bengali folktales for my collection.

We love to share books with our kids that are fun yet incorporate some sort of bigger life lesson. Grandma and the Great Gourd do an excellent job of both! So glad we found this gem. We're grateful to the authors for this fresh, modern version of a timeless Bengali folktale. It is really a perfect gift for kids.

Although this book is clearly intended for children, I must confess that, as an adult, I enjoyed it immensely. The illustrations are vivid and complex, and the story is engaging and faintly exotic. I hope Divakaruni decides to publish more of these Bengali folk tales in the future!

Absolutely lovely book! Well written and very different. My 3 year old loves it and we read it very often.
