Mel Bay's You Can Teach Yourself Dobro Paperback – June 1, 1996

This is a almost a good Dobro book for beginners....... butGoes way to far to fast for a beginner. Let;s do about a dozen simple song and then get into slant chords and capos.There are 100's of good three chords song. for beginners.Not near enough on how to make a good tone double-stop string picking, let wait a year for this.

I have played acoustic guitar for many years but always loved the sound of that quare neck/lap style dobro. I bought myself a round neck dobro thinking since I know how to play regular six string guitar than I can also play dobro too that way. Answer is no. Can not get that country/western style sound from playing dobro like a regular 6-string. So, if you also made that mistake you don't have to go and buy square neck dobro, there is a lot cheaper way of doing this. Big difference between square and round neck dobro, besides neck shape, is the string height. If you have a round neck dobro and want to play it lap style with slide bar, all you need is nut riser. It goes over your original nut without any major adjustment or modification to your dobro. All you have to do is loosen the strings, put the nut riser on and retighten to your desired tuning. Mine happen to be GBDGBD.For how-to book I decided to go with Mel Bay's because I had previous experience with their banjo book. I like it, gets the job done, recommend it.

I just received this book. It looks like a reprint of the book because it has a plainer cover. I don't mind that, but I was expecting to get a DVD along with it because of the other reviews. I was looking at some other offers of this book and did not pay attention that the one I was ordering did not have a DVD included. Now I have to order a DVD separate. I just expected that all the Teach Yourself series had a DVD included.

You cannot use this book to reach yourself the dobro. VERY, VERY CONFUSING.

Janet Davis is great on this teaching also. All of her books are good. Easy to learn from her because she makes it simple.

This book is self explanatory and easy to understand. I recommend it for all that want to learn how to use their Dobro,

Excellent introduction to technique

I bought the book to learn to play Wabash Cannonball on my new Dobro. I found it to be an excellent guide with some different ways to play not only that song, but many others. I am very happy with the product.

Die Aufgabe: ich wollte ETWAS Dobro lernen. Nein, ich hatte beziehungsweise habe nicht vor, ein Dobro-Virtuose zu werden, ich beabsichtige nicht, mit einer Steelgitarre zum Plattenmillionär oder Country&Western-Star zu werden. Ich will auch nicht wissen, wann und wo welche Steelgitarre von welchem genalen Bastler oder berühmten Instrumentenbaumeister gebaut wurde, ebensowenig interessiert mich Musikheorie oder "der theoretische Hintergrund des Slide-Gitarre-Spiels".Ich will einfach nur als Erweiterung zu meinem "normalem" Gitarrespiel ein bisschen Dobro lernen und suchte dazu ein paar gute Tipps.Und das fand ich mit diesem Büchlein in perfekter Weise.Grundsätzliche Dinge des Spiels werden kurz und sinnvoll erklärt, ohne sich in Nebensächlichkeiten zu verlieren. Und dann geht es sogleich mit dem Spielen von einfachen Songs los. Simpel und einfach, ohne Notenkenntnisse zu benötigen kann man gleich loslegen. Nach 15 Minuten Übungszeit kann man das erste Lied auf der Slidegitarre spielen. Wenn man dann weiter übt, lernt man mehr und mehr, wie das mit dem Dobro so geht.Ich finde das Büchlein ungemein hilfreich. Wenn ich nachmittags mal Lust hatte, etwas zu üben, holte ich meine Slidegitarre raus, schnappte mir dieses Büchlein und übte ein Stündchen. Nach ein paar Tagen schon hatte ich das Prinzip begriffen und konnte damit beginnen, auch andere Stücke als die im Buch zu spielen.Vermutlich gibt es ausführlichere und musikalisch ausgefeiltere Lehrbücher, die dann höchsten Ansprüchen gerecht werden. Aber wer wie ich einfach nur mal ein bisschen lernen will, wie das mit einer Slidegitarre so geht, für den ist diese Büchlein absolut perfekt.

Dobro tuition yes, and very good it would be too. Unfortunately there are several books with the same title and author. some are just that the book others had a CD. Others a DVD. Unfortunately the one I ordered was just the book whilst I would have been better placed with the book and DVD. In hindsight I was to impulsive on the evening I proceeded with my order. I regrettably had to send it back, as "unfit for purpose". Not I should add because it would not teach me Dobro, just that I am more likely to learn if their is a visual presentation too. For what brief time I viewed the book and came to that realization I can recommend it.

Janet does a very good job of showing you how to play this tricky, but lovely instrument. Sadly, although a pianist of sorts, I have found difficulty in making the darn thing do what I want it to. Let me say, though, that if you don't have three thumbs and a piece of wood on each hand you will almost certainly learn to play the Dobro - the slide guitar, under Janet's tutelage!
