A Beautiful, Soulful and Useful Read
I first came across author Alex Elle on instagram. I found her posts to be motivating and inspirational, and written from living her truths. I had no doubt she would author a book that would have the same impact, but I wasn't prepared to be absolutely shook by some of the revelations she shared as she learned about herself and shared those truths with her readers. The content in the book was so good that I read it in just two days! And I can't wait to read it again, this time with a journal, so that I can explore some of the things that resonated with me on a much deeper level. I highly recommend this book!

"After the Rain" deserves more than 5 🌟's!
"After the Rain" is a beautiful book inside and out. The book is written in lessons. After each lesson which is Alex's personal story, she gives you some "gentle reminders", as she calls them and questions to meditate over. I am on lesson 3, "Self Love", and it has opened up feelings inside, that I didn't know were there. It's helped me to ask myself the question, "Do I really love my self?", and what came to surface surprised me. If I truly love myself, why do I not care for me like I care for everyone else. One of my spiritual gifts is helping others, but this chapter made me realize that I never use my gift to help myself! So, as you see this book is an awakening of the heart, mind, and soul!! BUY THE BOOK!! I promise, you will not be disappointed!!!

Too long, but insightful
Giving her life as a background, the author shares with us important lessons that life has taught her. We travel through both significant events, and through pretty usual ones, that nonetheless for some reason bring peace, or on the contrary, suffering. The book has several messages. Some of them sound overly optimistic, for instance, to never give up on yourself, always be ready for a change, and try to learn something from all negative events. The book is nonetheless not that much optimistic. The author emphasizes that working on yourself is a continuous and never-ending process. There will always be obstacles and doubts. Life is always ready to revalidate who we are. Paradoxically, I found these more realistic messages heart-warming, and I feel that was also the author's intention: finding peace in acceptance. As I agreed with most of the thoughts, most of the time reading, I was nodding with agreement, but I was not deeply moved by what I read. There were just a couple of times when I felt sorry for the author, and when I could relate a bit to her. It is hard for me to say whether the book can teach anything to someone who is not familiar with the presented ideas. Teaching particular skills is however not the focus at all. It is more about paying attention to particular things. The author for instance tells why self-love is important, but encourages the reader to find his way to it. The only guidance offered are questions at the end of each chapter, called meditations. I am not saying it is wrong, I am just stating what I feel is the role the book wants to play. The subtitle says that the content of the book are reminder. I feel like a lot of shorter chapters are reminders, providing just a short story as a background. My feeling is that the longer a chapter is, the more out of place it is. I just did not feel that I had to know that many details from the author's life to fully relate and get importance on the particular topic. I was a little bored by those details. I find the summary to be almost perfect in playing its role. It is a very condensed text, paying attention to self-love, the importance of our feelings, etc. In my opinion, some chapters do not contribute much to this final message, and those are the longer chapters. This is why my final impression is not that great. Concerning the style the author uses, I am fine with it. It is not pretentious, which I find important in the subjects the book raises. Some metaphors I find to be particularly good, thought-provoking, and give new perspective. To summarize, the book serves its role. It is in my opinion about two times too long, but it has a lot of insightful thoughts.

What a vulnerable narrative and amazing reminder that I am not alone on this journey...
After the Rain is one of those books you have to leave on your nightstand and come back to whenever you need a pick me up. As a twenty-something Black woman, it feels like the road to healing is unclear because of the lack of vulnerability of women who have come before me. Alex was so open in her writing. I felt so seen, understood, and heard by her. I felt like she outlines a pathway on how to choose yourself and set healthy boundaries, which I so needed.nI love how each chapter begins with her narrative and then shifts to more of a life lesson. I have a new takeaway every time I crack it open. I try to tell everyone who is 'doing the work' to get this book. IT'S THAT GOOD. I recommend this book million times over.

Quite honestly the most beautiful book I have ever read. A soothing, nourishing guide to reflection, growth and self love. Alex Elle is honest and truthful, and her lessons are delivered in a way that feels personal to the reader. Perfect read in the current climate. The tonic I needed for 2020.
