These couldn't be more comfortable
First pair of cross/gravel shoes, and I'm blown away by the comfort and fit of these shoes. the 43 fit my size 9 feet perfectly, which was a little surprising because I'm usually between a 9 and a 9.5. I've ridden in them a handful of times, and they've worked perfectly with my Shimano 8120 pedals. I'll update the review if they don't wear very well, but everything I've read online prior has said that these shoes are so durable they're basically bulletproof.Additionally, the carbon-reinforced sole is delightfully stiff. I have a pair of full carbon-soled Mavics, and the stiffness is quite close, with the edge going to the Mavics. However, the XC701s are much more comfortable. Super happy with my purchase and can't wait to keep riding these

Creates a hotspot on the top of your foot.
Creates a hotspot on the top of your foot. All of the people mentioning this, and I bought them anyway. As soon as I put them on I tightened them down and waited. Within a few minutes I have the same Hotspot from the boa lacing on the top of my foot by the ankle. The Shimano would fix this, they would have an excellent shoe. The soles are super grippy, and everything else about the shoe is positive. I wish I didn't get a hotspot and could make them work.

Buyer beware: you might get WIDE instead of regular width
I bought these & received WIDE size. Luckily, they work for my feet, but I can't use thinner summer cycling socks with them even using the BOA to make 'em super tight. I really needed them, otherwise I'd have sent them back to get the correct width for the size.

My 1st STIFFish clipless shoe. UNCOMFORTABLE after 45 miles
For perspective, I'm usually a MTB cyclist with flat pedals 3 times a week, but this is for my road bike that is clipless and I ride once every few weeks (30+ miles each ride )and a yearly century ride.I have had a clipless shoe before but it was more like a soft/flexible sneaker with laces. And it was comfy. But flexed.I'm normally a size 10 in sneakers/gym shoes and bought this at a size 43As I was planning on doing my 3rd century ride I decided to try these out WITH medium sized arch support insoles, my first pair of FIRMish clipless shoes with BOA system lacing.I first tried it on a 40 miles ride and seemed ok for the most part.Next on my century ride, first it seems fine but after about 45 miles the tongue or the large strap feels like it starts to dig into the TOP of my foot (talus area?)where the top of my foot transition to my leg, and as the day goes and more miles I put on it feels like it gets worse, this happened during my century ride, I tried readjusting my foot/tongue/strap but it didn't help by the time I was 70 miles in. And by the time I finished my 100 miles it was very uncomfortable. Not to the point where it broke my skin but enough where it was irritated and there was a mark on both my feet. One side was more irritated than the other but still uncomfortable. Not sure if the shoe needs to be broken in more but I've put on 150 miles so far, I've used normal breathable cycling socks, and the size seems ok, so maybe I'll give an updated review later down the road. It's a shame because if it wasn't for the uncomfortable tongue or strap digging into the skin it would've been great. Trying them on feels good, but once I put miles in, it's annoying. Wish I could return them but I've used them on 2 rides already

Comfortable with One Exception
The instep portion, upper strap, of the shoe is higher than most and not very flexible or soft - not padded. This may vary with individual foot shape and may make the instep area uncomfortable.
