Q: My kid likes to build block houses and loves power lines but doesn’t build on any base. Will these stand on their own?

These poles will not stand on their own. The base of my layout is foam board. So I was able to insert them into that. They are really nice poles and look realistic. Especially with the transformers installed. Since they have to be assembled I’d think twice before buying them for young children.

Q: Could these work for a cake topper? How tall are poles once assembled?

Yes, I’d say about 5.5 inches

Q: Can you manually select which color is lit up?

Hello. This model traffic light has separate wiring for each of the three bulbs, with a common neutral wire. It is recommended for use with the Walthers traffic light controller, sold separately, which will allow realistic operation of one or more signals (with the lights operating in proper sequence). You may also hard-wire the unit at the appropriate voltage so that only one of the bulbs lights up as desired, or you could use a manual selection switch. Thank you for your interest!
