Yes it will work with a 3 or a 1. The people on here saying it won't work as a 1 wire are ignorant to 12v automobile charging systems!!! They think they know but they don't! It works with 1 wire or 3 if you know how to correctly excite it. You may have to hit it with 12volts for a few seconds to build residual magnetism in the stator. If you don't know what I'm talking about then I suggest you study up before installing this alternator. Self excited still may need to be manually excited for the 1st time. Then depending on how much amp draw and load you may need to find tune the output or you'll be the guy saying " worked great for a couple of months then burned up". There is a lot more to it than most people understand.

What are the connections label r and f for

Supposed to be 1 wire connection, battery + to red bat. post on alternator. I didn't use the spade terminals. Can't explain terminal R. Normal markings B, battery, A, armature, F, field.

Beware of Faulty parts

Faulty Alternator. Does not charge. Wanted a chrome one for my car build. Unfortunately it takes time to install a whole new engine and you can’t return now if these things don’t work. Buy car parts where you have more time for return and testing. This part was faulty. Lesson learned to not buy on Amazon.

Decent value

This replaced a 65 amp Delco one wire that aged out. Unit is an exact copy but I had to clock mine to get the amp light plug facing up. Easy to do, just loosen all the clamping screws and gently pry apart the halves until you can rotate them to the position you need then retorque. The unit needs to come up to about 1200rpm to self energize, but stays charging 14vdc at lower rpms after that, it also makes an odd whining, almost turbo like, when it's charging. Not a deal breaker but it cost it a star. BTW, this is a one wire, the extra plug wires are for a dash "idiot" light; one goes to 12vdc (output term) the other goes to the dash light.
