VMS ML-1 Modeling Microphone - Matte Black (Renewed)

Superb mic!!

I unfortunately do not have any better pictures available in regards to one issue but that will be listed due to some phone storage issues; however I will say my experience with this seller was completely a nightmare.I received my Slate Digital ML-1 while in the midst of a massive studio overhaul that required me to finish sum renovations on a room that was gutted prior to me acquiring my house, once the room was fully finished and acoustically treated I bad a new desk to assemble, and sum other gear that I was still waiting to have delivered.So upon delivery of the mic I briefly opened to package to get my software license out and inspect the contents to ensure all components were in fact included. After setting up software I set the mic aside until my renovations and studio overhaul were both complete.Feeling accomplished a week or so later I finally began testing the microphone. This is were the nightmare that cost me approximately twice the value of the mic in lost revenue in my small but growing business.Upon testing the microphone I found the noise floor to be incredibly high, initially the mic was full of constant static that was seated around -30db in the daw despite proper gain staging (11db shy of the -21db level in the DAW For recording interface level remained between -10 & -12db) so I spent a day or so trying to ensure nothing was wrong on my end, after swapping chords, interfaces and trying various settings not only did the problem still remain it worsened.All of a sudden I could not get any signal unless the gain was practically maxed out and when I did get signal the static in the noise floor now seated at -24db in my DAW (3db less than the level for recording and impossible to remove in post)On top of all that, it is not visible in the photo provided, but I did come to find that my mics condenser was slightly misaligned in the capsule.All in all if I could give no stars I would as the mic I was sent was a complete paperweight that cost me a great deal in lost revenue.When contacting customer service and the seller I was also told there was no option to do a direct exchange and I would be required to return the product and then repurchase it and the ETA of the resolution would have taken about two weeks but they did approve a return. At this time tho the sales had ended and I felt completely cheated for trying to save $50 on top of the sale that made completely brand new options $500 USD.In an effort to reduce time and loss of revenue I contacted Slate Digital themselves as Alto is an approved pre-owned dealer, I did receive the Classic Tubes 3 expansion pack for free for the inconvenience and a brand new un-used replacement. This also cut my approximate wait time in half.Yes Slate Digital themselves are the ones who service and certify the renewed products sold by Alto Music on this page, however I am doubtful Slate Digital certified a mic in this condition and weather the package was mishandled in shipping or at the warehouse I can’t say, however I can say Slate Digital provide superior customer service and luckily Alto Music is an approved dealer so I was still eligible for their help. So can I say this is in fact Alto Music’s fault? Not entirely.What I can say in closing as this experience was not at all worth the headache and lost revenue, and for that reason I would highly recommend purchasing elsewhere even if that means saving a little more to buy brand new, and always purchase this mic from a licensed dealer so you aren’t just getting lucky to have had purchased from a 3rd party on Amazon that thankfully is a licensed dealer like I did.All in all for the lost revenue I could have bought two of these brand spankin new, at least Slate Digital gave me a VST expansion to make the losses a little less, but it still doesn’t fix the damage to my customers relationships, cover all lost revenue or give me my wasted time back.Again Great mic, but purchase elsewhere if you aren’t willing to take a gamble and have your own expensive nightmare. This is the first time I have purchased a refurbished piece of equipment that was completely non functional, or defective in any way. However my trust is now broken, and the only way I could receive any customer service that made my issues and their impact on my life feel relevant and valued was via Slate Digital. I spent hours and even a complete day going back and forth with Alto and Amazon via messages and phone, it took me 3 emails to Slate Digitals to get a much more satisfactory resolution, some compensation for my losses and a replacement in half the time.Horrible service from Alto and I will never be doing business again, and if you aren’t ready for a headache, lost time, and if you are in similar circumstances as myself lost revenue, and poor customer service. Avoid this seller as if they are the black plague.

I have owned two of these microphones in the past year, both had the same malfunction where they would inexplicably start giving off electronic noise. I think it is a faulty wiring issue, or perhaps a circuit was overwhelmed by the phantom power.Either way, a mic this expensive should last longer than a year. While the mic was a great tool, having to spend money on a new mic again is very frustrating. I would recommend getting a modeling mic from a different brand, at least that is what I am going to try.
