Timeless classic does it for me.
I rarely give five star rating, but I cannot avoid giving it to this product. Got interested in DE wet shaving a couple of months ago and followed a research into the products (razor, blades, soap, brush, even mug!) like I do with such 'buying projects' of mine. For soap I narrowed down on D.R. Harris and Mitchell's Wool Fat. It was a tough decision, but the latter's legendary past made me tip towards it.Now purchasing these items from Amazon had its own lead time, over a month. And once I got my Merkur razor, I couldn't hold on, and bought an Ayurveda Recipe shaving cream (with very good ratings on Amazon) and an Omega brush to begin my DE shaving till I got my ordered and awaited items (Mitchell's wool fat and Semogue brush). I've been shaving with it for last three weeks. It was surely more engaging than the cartridge razor and gel shaving we are all used to, but I wasn't able to see a major difference in results. I mean the shave was as good or bad as with Gillette Mach 3 and shaving gel.And then, my Mitchell's Wool fat arrived. The smell upon opening it was intoxicating. But the real test was the next morning. I followe exactly my routine set over the last three weeks, a two pass along the grain. (I don't like going against the grain. Though I have tried it, I feel it makes the beard hair harder). And boy, wa I surprised! Mind you, I was using the blade into its fourth day, but the first pass itself gave me a very fine shave, with hardly any razor drag. At the end, I was smiling at the smoothness of the shave. Nothing had changed except the soap (Mitchell's instead of Ayurveda Recipe) and the brush (Semogue instead of Omega... more about that in the Semogue 1305 review), but the shave finally made me realise what DE Shaving was all about! I had the smoothest shave I ever had, and what more, there was far less burn when I applied the alum as I do regularly after my shave! The Wool Fat had done its magic from 1895 and it didn't fail today. And whenever I walked into the bathroom till late in the afternoon, that aroma was still there! I also noticed it was on me as well.Guys, I firmly believe that classics don't become classics and survive for centuries for no good reason. They truly have that timeless perfection to them. Yes, you'd spend a big amount on this (around Rs 2000 on the refills which would last about 6 months Iof daily use believe, making it about Rs 10 per shave). But I am convinced it's worth! The ceramic case is a luxury, so you can go just for the refill puck and use your own case, or like me, decide to splurge once a while to accentuate that authentic feel. But this soap is the classic you need to give a try once if you are into wet shaving as I am truly now. Also, you can save your money on the preshave oil as MWF makes it redundant. It has all that's needed in it.My gear: Merkur 34C, Semogue 1305, Mitchell's Wool Fat, Persona Blue, Osma Alum. (All classics.)
