Q: Is the smell really bad?

They did smell strong at first. I washed them in sudsy dish water, rinsed, dried and aired out a couple of days and now there is no smell at all. This is a favorite of mine. I carry two in my handbag every day because they help organize small items and because I can see through these mesh bags to retrieve when needed. Hope this helps.

Q: If I use it on the beach, might the sand go through the mesh or is the mesh tight enough to withstand the sand?

It will withstand most of the sand but as granules range in size all the way down to dust... I would say it is not sand-proof.... there will be some infiltration.
