Abstract Painting: For Today's Contemporary Artist

I have been an artist for 10 years, and this book has taught me new skills that I had never learned on my path as an artist. I love how the book breaks down all the different elements of creating an abstract painting. Each chapter gives you a breakdown of materials, diagrams, tools and materials, along with amazing artwork. I also found that the book was easy to read, and not overly complicated, but well thought out. This book is a perfect for everyone ready to learn about abstract painting.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book and am now very grateful to have it. Maybe it is a case of when the student is ready, the teacher will appear but I find this to be the best guide. It is clear, long on beautiful full color examples and short on excess verbiage. It makes abstract painting both understandable and exciting. Thank you, Kate Ashton! You are a gifted and generous teacher.

When I first received this book I wondered if it were worth keeping, it didn't seem very substantive. Having read through it, however, I find it really helpful that the author explains key principles and elements of abstract art -- each briefly and succinctly -- followed by examples to illustrate. The author just makes a point, shares examples and moves on. I found the economy and clarity really helpful.

Abstract Painting: For Today's Contemporary Artist is enormously inspiring. The book is laid out by techniques, which is very useful for practice. The photos and commentary are clear, and because they are by a well known gallery owner, they are a credible source for what makes a great painting. The author, Ashton, and her colleagues are amazing artists. A must read for abstract painters.

New to abstract? This book is for you! Already paint abstract? This book is for you! I paint more realist but was trying to bring some abstract vibes to my art. This book helped a lot! There are some really good technics in there and the examples are great. I’m more of a visual learner so I loved how the lessons were right to the point and didn’t get boring with too much text. I got some cool ideas for my art 😉

the book is easy to read, clear and very informative; the quality of the paintings included in the book are amazing, very inspirational! I haven put it down since it arrived, many tools and cool techniques that I had no idea I could use. I think after reading the whole book I'm going to be a better artist! I recommend it for beginners and even for more experimented abstract and non abstract painters --GREAT BOOK--

I absolutely loved this book. I found it so easy to understand and was filled with helpful techniques on how to either get started or improve your abstract art. I loved how it showed how to create a technique but also how to critique your own work and look for what went right or what went wrong. I think it’s a great resource for any artist. I’ve referred back to it many many times in creating my art.

Took a class. Read this to understand the concept. Learned the lingo and some good practice in. Well thought out and good examples. Artist/ writer also had a great story in the about section. Recommend it

All I can say is that it's Superinspiring and a book you'll never regret adding to your library!

I'm quite new to painting and particularly Abstract and have bought a few books expecting "This is the one!" each time but Kate's book actually got me to put paint to canvas. How good or bad they are is not important , it got me off my butt doing something, thanks Kate 👍

A useful book. However, beware: this is a self-published book printed by Amazon Fulfillment. As such it is lacking in the quality of the print and quality of the paper. Color reproductions require coated or glossy paper, which this book does not have, being printed on regular paper.
