This reel is so much fun to use and a beast for durability. Since Daiwa announced the updated versions of the classic Black-Gold reels, I've been itching to pick up one and take it on the water. I finally got my chance when Amazon stocked it, so I didn't hesitate. Price was fair and came in cheaper than the larger outdoors stores, so that's a positive. At the moment, I've got this reel paired with a Fenwick HMX 6'6" XF rod and using Sufix 832 Braid. The combination is well balanced and lightweight. The only tip I can provide is to NOT overload this reel. For my purposes, I know I can't cast 200 yards, so I'm not going to unnecessarily overload the reel. If you do, you'll enjoy a lot of tangles, and that's just not a lot of fun. Build quality feels solid all-around and after 100+ hours on the water so far, doesn't show any weak points or signs of wear. I've checked the reel arm, the spool and all moving joints - I'm pleased to say it still looks brand new. Casting is very smooth with the only faults being the occasional user-error where I've overshot my target - but that has nothing to do with the reel. The retrieve is also silky-smooth with a very confident crank when you're bringing your lure in. There's no wobble or noise reeling in. When you get the reel, just spin the crank to evaluate the smoothness, if there's any play, double check the fastening of the handle. The drag system is a real gem on this reel, handling much more than similar reels of this size and very durable. I've had great luck this season with Bass, Pike and Walleye - this reel handled them all without choking. For the price compared to other reels in this size, you're getting a lot of the features which are on reels priced at $300+. Happy hunting.

I suppose ordinarily, customarily, it would be prudent to wait to review a product until after you've really had a chance to use (and abuse) it. However, I got this reel in the mail today and got to using it nearly immediately. Now granted, I'm really not a huge gear head (the last reel/rod combo I bought was in 2005) but this is the nicest reel I've ever used. It has such a smooth, easy cast and a really nice drag with it that I'm just over the moon. No regrets whatsoever about this purchase. I would imagine that there's honestly better equipment out there - deals to be had, more bearings, less weight etc, but this reel fell just under $100. Not by much, but ce'est la vie, it feels like a steal at that price, it really does. I went freshwater fishing today in a large river and I caught nothing on it, as a caveat, but it didn't hardly seem to matter because all the other important dynamics were there as previously mentioned. One final note: while it's a bit vain and a little silly, this reel also just looks really nice. Once you open the box, you kind of get enough of a different perspective than the Amazon pics to kind of understand, it just looks nice. Solid reel, don't think you can go wrong with it!

Wow factor reel when it comes to spinning. And also 10/10 for this supplier as I needed an answer to a question before purchasing the reel, not only did l get a prompt answer to my question but received a full break down of all the specifications for this item. It also arrived within a week of ordering to boot.

Look and feel at highest level. Yet to try it in actual use.

I now own three different size Daiwa BG and I truly appreciate all of them a lot! Their price does not reflect their performance, they most absolutely feel and handle like a reel twice their price. My favorite is the 2500, it flat out handles any fish I've caught on it so far and it does so with style, I'm hoping to add some more heavy-weight fish for my 4500 to give it a reel run for the money ;) I recently got the 1500 to use for my ultra-light, haven't caught fish on it, but the reel it retired (not defect but garbage..) is in comparison not comparable, much smoother and I like the added weight! My only wish was that Daiwa made the BG's in 750 size, that would be really cool. As far as weight goes, they are a bit heavier, I personally like that, the reel feels solid and you know it's made of actual quality materials. Pairings: 2500 -> 7' Light St. Croix premier, 10/10 4500 -> 7' Uggly stick, 7.5/10 1500 -> 6' UL St. Croix trout, 8.5/10
