Must read!
THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!Have you ever had that intense passion for wanting to finish something? Because I had to go out and put the book down with 100 pages left and all I wanted to do was finish this book.It is so beautifully written, the characters have so much heart (human and automae). I cannot wait for the second one, of which I preordered while halfway through this one. It’s full of drama and love and angst and adventure, like all queer books really, it’s not just about it including queer but it was just fresh and new and I just loved it!I even told my friend about it and just got so excited I’ve ordered one as a gift to her house - I can’t do that for everyone SO YOURE JUST GONNA HAVE YO BUY IT!I CANT BELIEVE I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE NOW! Well done, Nina, I love you, I hate you for not having a thousand more pages in my hand, you’re an amazing writer, you deserve all of your favorite beverages!

So brilliant my cats wanted to read it
This was a brilliant read. It's definitely character driven in the first half and them moves more into being plot driven. Usually, I find character driven stories somewhat boring unless they are written exceptionally well. This was written very well indeed, Varela's prose is almost lyric and it stands out as a character of its own in this novel. I was intrigued by the characters and their interactions. The dialogue, while simple, was perfect. It fit the characters like a second skin. I stayed up late into the night reading simply for the pleasure of the words and how Varela carved unique descriptions with them. I could feel the emotions as they poured off the page. I cared about the characters and I was with them through their journey. I am excited for the 2nd book in the series and would recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy adventure with two women as main characters.

Really unique actually!
Lots of interesting elements to this book.....parallels to our own human-maker relationship with AI and technology today. Interesting exploration of power at both a leadership level and an interpersonal level. I really enjoyed the chapters from Crier's perspective...her battle with her humanity and emerging instincts, alongside her struggle to reconcile what she thought she understood with these new emotional experiences is really captivating. I find her utterly charming and she has quickly become one of my favourite characters in a book series.Ayla is a fantastic fantasy protagonist-gritty, determined, heroic, damaged, flawed. If you're looking for a great page turner that touches on the best of fantasy and sci fi....with a fantastic hate to love romance (f/f) this is for you.

Human and Automae
I loved Varela’s writing style, holy cow her style is SO fluid and gorgeous, it’s the exact sort of prose I could read for the rest of my days happily. So, lovely prose, great forbidden love plot and oh, did I mention political intrigue and the hint of rebellion?Onto their love story. Because we’re focusing on them separately for the most part, and we see how much Ayla despises the automae, though I can believe Crier has a deep affection for her, I don’t believe Ayla does. And though Crier has affection, there’s so little time that’s passed that I struggle to believe that she is in love. So, while I love them, I’m still waiting to feel like they care for each other past friendship, and then we’ll work up to love.Though the pacing was a struggle for me to look past, I am sincerely in love with Varela’s writing style, the plot between automae and humans, and the characters.I buddy read this with Isabelle from Nine Tale Vixen, and expect a few more reviews from our buddy reads this month! [Also she does a way better job with explaining things in her reviews in general lol]Overall, four cups of coffee from me! Bring on book 2!!! This also gets to go on my StartonYourShelfathon list because I preordered this gorgeous baby, but finally, I’ve gotten around to it! The sequel, Iron Heart, is out in September!

Easy Read. Keeps You Hooked. Can't Wait For The Second Book.
"Crier's War" has definitely become one of my favorite books on my book shelf.I enjoyed every minute of reading it and honestly felt sad for finishing it so quickly. Big Admirations for the author, the style of writing is lovely. I adore the idea of the story. And am very impatiently waiting to see how it'll unfold in the Second Book. The love and hate are portrayed so well, I have no words.Anyways, the quality of the product is good, so is the story.LGBTQ+ elements and romance between the lead characters. The discoveries Crier makes along the way. Ayla's mixed feeling about it all. Crier's precious realization about passion and love. Aw maaaaan.Sum up: It's Good!
