No, they don't open. They are like the old toy baby bottles where most liquid looks like it disappears when flipped upside down and reappears right side up.

The product is manufactured in a way that it is one piece. Nothing unscrews; however I guess there is always a possibility of the item breaking. I feel 100% confident letting my grandchild play with them. I do not know if they contain harmful substances.
