Yes he lays flat...if anything the picture is deceiving....This bear is very soft and squishy for children to hold, but unless this bear is propped up against something, its hard to position it to sit up as shown in the picture.....with that said 100% recommend this bear

Have not done that with this particular bear, but have washed others. Don't ever dry them in a dryer... The "fur" is never the same.

There are 2 small labels on it, on one the writing ist "GUND (written in red colour), next row "KAI", and next Row "A number"
