Magnetic, well crafted and portable.

I was a little nervous about ordering this set, as Amazon said it was a frequently returned item.I don't know what the reason for that could be, but the set I received is flawless.It is solid wood throughout, and the playing surface is made up of individual squares of wood veneer (some boards I have seen just have a single piece of wood with dyed or painted squares).Mine is the 7x7 model, and is kept closed by magnets rather than a metal latch. I think this is better, since it gives a cleaner look, and the magnets are plenty strong enough to keep it closed.The overall quality of workmanship is excellent, with smooth transitions between the two halves of the board in both open and closed positions.The chessmen themselves are very nicely made considering their small size. They are satisfyingly proportioned and easy to tell apart from each other.The magnets felt a little weak at first, but they proved to be strong enough to hold even the heavier pieces in place, even when the board was held sideways or inverted. Stronger magnets may actually be a bad thing, because it might cause the pieces to be attracted to one another and cause problems.All in all, I don't have a single bad thing to say about this set. It's an absolute bargain for the price, and I'm thinking of buying some of the other sizes. It would make an excellent gift.

This is a pretty decent little set. It’s not incredibly well-made and so I don’t know how durable it will be over the years but for now, the quality is just fine it will travel well and the weight is a nice middle ground where you can carry it easily, but the pieces do not feel extremely cheap. The appearance is decent and overall this offer is a good value for the money. It is great for a young beginner to have pieces that are magnetized. That is the best feature of this set. Additionally, I like that you can store the pieces in the cut foam inside as opposed to having them roll around loosely . If I needed another chess set, I would get this again as a gift.

I got exactly what i paid for, whlie i do have two small issues i cannot say that this chess set is any less than worth it. Time will tell how long it last. First i will start with the issues the white Rook and Pawn have the magnets improperly seated having them sit aloft and is annoying but fixable. The felt bottoms are not firm on the bottom and will wear over time im sure but again it is fixable. The reason i choose to ignore the flaws and rate this set at four stars is because of "Quality v Price" this set being 7×7 with extra queens allows actual play and portability. The pieces are as described and proportionate to the board which is important to myself. The board is level when placed on a flat surface and well finished. The pieces have built in storage and folds closed with a magnetic hold. Overall i am pleased as it is hard to find perfection in a -$30 pricetag. I hope this review helps anyone looking for a chess set with charm.

I purchased 10, 12, 14 & 16 inch boards to see which I liked the most.I ended up keeping the 14x14 and returning the rest. I purchased this to have a travel set that I could bring with me to set up at coffee shops or parks to play with friends. I found the 14x14 to be the best in terms of compactness and ability to travel with while also maintaining some integrity of what a real chess board and pieces should feel like. I really love the packing of the pieces within the foam under the board. Other sets I found the pieces would not actually sit in their molding and would become damaged while transporting.The board itself looks beautiful with a nice gloss finish and the pieces are a nice wood that don’t seem cheap. Honestly was very impressed overall with the quality of it especially for a travel set.Something to note is all sizes 12x12 and under do not have a latch on the side for the pieces. I didn’t keep these sizes long enough to see if this would be a problem but 14 & 16 inch models do have that latch. Moving down from 14 to 12 the pieces are noticeable smaller. Would be nice for really tight spaces but I’ve found that even smaller coffee tables are able to for the 14inch model.Don’t think you can go wrong with any of these options just wanted to give the feedback having bought all of them.

This chess set is beautifully made. I love the magnetic bottoms to if the board is bumped the pieces do not move. The storage for the pieces is a wonderful feature.

I got the 10". I love it. It's adorable, and well made. I like how all the pieces fit inside, in their own spot, and the board folds shut with a magnet instead of clasps...it's a very strong magnet. The magnets on the board/pieces don't seem to be super strong - but they serve their purpose. I'm super happy with this purchase.

Wife and I were out and found a chess set - decided to play. Been years and I won so that was fun. She made me sweat but I pulled it together and so it was good. We got home and decided we should have a chess set so I found this one. Love it. Very happy with the quality and price. Packing was fine. Board is quite handsome - well varnished. Hinges have felt covering them which is a nice touch so it does not scratch table surface when playing. Each piece has a cutout in which to nestle and there is even an extra queen. Each piece is magnetic which helps tremendously if a game is unfinished and needs to be set aside. Honestly, I could not be happier. First game, beat 30-something Engineer son. Score! Beat 50-something very smart wife. SCORE!!! Life was good. Was. Rematch was marred by the old guy missing a super obvious move and losing material and then blundering away a SECOND piece. UGH!! Wife slowly crushed me. Nothing I could do but take it like a man... which means crying, making excuses, blaming the long day etc. etc. etc.Studying strategy now. Control the middle. Knights before Bishops. Knights on rim are grim. Don't get Queeny involved too soon. Etc. Etc. But those blunders hurt so bad.
