Not just for Boats!!
I have been selling architectural and industrial coatings for over 35 years and this is the best pure spar varnish I have seen. I selected this product after reviewing other like products on Amazon. I work for the largest global supplier of coatings and we do not manufacture a similar product. The job I did was a simple task. Refinishing the 60 year old entry door to my house. As advertised Pettit says this product has more film build per coat and I agree. After stripping and staining, 2 coats look amazing. They recommend 4 coats, but of coarse this product is aimed at boaters(hence the name "spar varnish"). It does contain xylene but the smell is minimal, it's in the thinner blend of this product to help with drying time because this product also contains some linseed oil. Most varnishes miss the right viscosity for brushing, but this was very easy brushing. It's still a varnish so take care about applying to much as it will sag. As you apply, tip off your work and you will minimize sags. If a customer is in my store, the only thing I can sell is an oil modified polyurethane, and I knew that I would never use this type of varnish on my own house. I now send people to Amazon for this product. As for the person who applied 22 coats of this product to his boat and had blistering, I can tell him exactly what happened. That many coats is 18 more than the manufacturer recommends because of the amount of dry film per coat. To apply that many coats would take 30-45 days with perfect temperature and humidity. Shrink wrap the boat in some form of plastic, and moisture forms on the underside. Days and months go by with freezing and thawing and blistering was the result. As per usual, human intervention caused another paint complaint. To sum up, the blend of oils, the ease of use, outstanding gloss, not to mention that amazing linseed oil smell, make this the best spar varnish I have seen.

Refinishing front door facing southern sun
The delivery of the varnish was on time. I had no problem with the application of the varnish. The only issue that I saw was that on the third day, the varnish in the can was starting to gel up a little bit. I had seen a previous review with the same issue. The final product on the door was a beautiful amber glow that even my neighbors said was gorgeous. Now I need to see if the UV resistance is as good as I am hoping for. That was the main reason for buying this product. So far very happy. I also used it on the bay window seat area with good results.

Application Challenged Me!
The problem may be with me, but I found it very thick to apply. Used foam brush first and that’s a mistake. But even with high quality brush still was heavy consistency. Lots of runs. Maybe there’s a way to thin it?

Thin it a bit
It is thicker now than originally and needs to be thinned to get a good finish or else you’ll have misses.

Great Varnish
This varnish is superb. It settles like a mirror and builds very fast. It brings out great color in any wood. I'm happy you can order this online. Not all areas carry this product. This varnish has an amber color so if you're using it on something like Birdseye maple it will darken it a bit.

This stuff is great! Just four coats on 40 year old exterior teak and it looks like new. complete stripping or careful sanding work best but that goes without saying.

Does need thinning.
Easy to use with good coverage.
