How smooth are the bearings in the gimbal? Could you relate them to as smooth as a skateboard bearing?

Yes; very smooth, much like 360 degree oscillating movement spherical bearing...

For something with a "cylindrical" profile, I don't get the dimensions. (5 x 2.5 x 1 inches?) What's the diameter of the piece held in the hand?

Paul, I don't get the dimensions either. The Gimbal driver is about 2.5 inches in diameter and 1 inch in length. I do not understand the 5. It is well made and has a nice finish. Taiwan I think. The nice looking (but slick) polished aluminum could be difficult to grasp with sweaty or greasy hands. Knurled would have been better but I was overall impressed with the quality. Tom

Does this 3/8 and the 1/4 Gimbal Rachets have a quick release?

if you mean can you release the socket with one hand no. You have to pull the socket off, it's held on by a spring loaded ball on one of the 4 sides. It doesn't take too much force, but no way to remove the socket with one hand.
