The best of its kind - but we deserve better.
This book is absolutely essential for anybody who wants to understand the history of football (soccer) tactics. Wilson skillfully takes the reader on a journey through the history of football, touching on key historical moments and many famous matches to show how tactics have developed over time. His research is impeccable and his conclusions are difficult to argue with. Wilson's skill is particularly apparent when the reader realizes what purpose his book actually serves. More than anything else, this is an argument that England's national team needs to take a different approach to its football strategy. Taken as a whole, this book is a clear indictment of the old "direct football" approach (also known as the "lob it forward" approach) in favor of a more "continental" style of play. Having said that, this book does have its limitations. Crucially, the lack of illustrations make it extremely difficult to follow, even for somebody with prior experience with tactical thinking. Many words could have been saved had long and confusing descriptions of who guards whom on defense were replaced by a simple illustration. Wilson is also guilty of letting the sources do the writing. The reader is burdened with an abundance of names, introduced to new people and new clubs every few pages, and wonders from time to time which of these faces are actually pertinent to the underlying story. Many historians make the mistake of writing the prose in the footnotes and the citations in the text: sadly, Wilson fits this description. The worst part of all is that it's not clear how much impact these tactical changes have had in the end. Many of the tactical innovations that were introduced seemed to have little to no impact on the teams playing with them. Even the most basic tactical developments in the 1910s and 1920s described in the first chapter seem to have resulted in defeat from the get-go. One wonders if the old debate between quality of player and quality of tactic might need to be revisited before we let the theory drive the ship. It's a good book, but not a great book. Certainly somebody else could do better with the topic.

This book is quite simply the best book ever written about the history of football and football tactics. It is pertinent, informative but also stylishly written . If you claim to love football you have to read this book.
