Can you somehow disable the sounds feature, perhaps by not putting in batteries?

It's not too loud. There's no switch to turn it off so you have to take the batteries out.

Hard to say. Is he really into helicopters or planes? You turn the blades by hand & it makes various helicopter noises. You might also consider FP Little People DC Super Friends (6 in cars.)
