What height is the plastic cover please?

Hi, the plastic lid is quite light but stayed on and has a good air vent you can open if required.

How much water should be put into the bottom tray?

I usually put about a 1/4 inch of water in the bottom of the tray. After about an hour I remove the planting tray and empty any excess water out.

doe this need a drip tray underneath?

No it includes a drip tray, with a clear removable module tray inside and a lid. Really fab set.
