Chet Sings, Chet Collaborates, Chet Plays, Chet Dazzles.
This is fast becoming one one of my favorite jazz albums. Chet was an incredible musician. This is soft, mellifluous jazz from the 1950s: languorous, evocative, and dreamy. Just listen to the first track: "That Old Feeling." His singing is full of yearning but NOT sentimental. Other favorites on here are: "I Fall in Love Too Easily," "Look For the Silver Lining," "It's Always You," and "My Ideal."Baker sings in a straightforward manner, and it is this approach that elevates this album above so many others. He has a sexy, dreamy voice yet he sings without the embellishments that so many performers feel the need to incorporate (esp. regarding jazz standards). There is certainly a time and place for embellishing, so don't get me wrong. I am just pointing out that Chet's directness brings an immediacy to his album that is both refreshing and alluring, and the music stays with you long after you finish listening. The mixture of sensuousness and aloofness elevates this one above the average jazz standards compilation. As with classical music, collecting jazz recordings can be a daunting and intimidating venture. One has to navigate through piles of marketing, confusing reissues, and mountains of different albums (many compilations, best of's, and so forth). Do yourself a favor: get THIS album. Buying from Amazon gets you the cd plus the digital copy. This is the original "Chet Baker Sings". Although many of the same tracks show up on other albums and compilations, this album is the best place to start for Chet Baker newcomers and/or Chet fans confused about the best albums or values out there.

Chet Baker Sings and trumpets with solid band
I never thought I’d be writing this : I like Chet Baker more than Miles Davis; and a big reason is he sings surprisingly smooth and clean; AND plays trumpet well.CHET BAKER SINGS is inspired as he plays tunes by classic songwriters of the day from Gershwin, to Rodgers and Hart, Sammy Cahn; and Hoagy Carmichael’s I Get Along Without You Very Well (Except Sometimes).I wish My Funny Valentine was longer but I just love the way Baker sings it.My cd purchase was complete with the addition of a great AutoRip which includes the band members not mentioned in cd! They are Russ Freeman, Pete Littman, Larry Marable, Carson Smith, Rob Neel, and a musician named James Bond (!)Chet Baker Sings just oozes cool, romantic class. Occasionally haunting in sadness too.Oh, and AutoRip also adds lyrics on majority of 14 tunes.Easy 4 stars plus.P.S I may not need another Chet singing album but I plan on getting another instrumental Baker album. His trumpet play is definitely worth listening too, also.
